After the funeral, I just kept driving. Not knowing exactly how long it will take but I know I'll end up at my destination. I kept crying on and off rembering the times my mama and I would travel. I don't know if I'd ever stop crying but I just knew I just had to keep going. After halfway in Georgia, my car started smoking so I pulled over and looked under the hood. My engine was fried, and it was already so late. I just laid back in my seat and fell asleep.
*Knock, Knock*
Huh? What was this sound in my head?
*Knock, Knock*
Opening my eyes, I see a police officer staring outside my window.
"Everything ok officer?" I ask Rolling down my window.
Ma'am are you ok?" The police officer ask. "We usually don't see a young lady sleeping in her car on the side of the interstate".
"I'm good officer, my car broke down last night and I'm heading to Florida." I responded.
The officer kind of gives me a confused look. "Ma'am your way of the course of Florida."
Feeling like an idiot i grab my phone and see I took the wrong exit.
"It seems like I took a wrong exit." I say admitting my mistake.
"Stay right here Ma'am." The officer says before he walks away.
The officer ends up walking away and says something into his radio. After a while I was scared, I was going to be arrested. After a while the officer came back.
" Well, there's a town called Savanah right there and there's a mechanic that's willing to help." He offers his assistance. "If you'd like you can ride into town with me when the tow truck gets here, and I can take you to the mechanic."
Looking a bit confused he continues, "There's a hotel right across the street you can stay at if it takes longer than this afternoon". Seeing my hesitant look in my face he jokingly says," Don't worry I'm not arresting you."
We both laugh as the tow truck pulls up and they hook up my car we head into Savanah, Georgia.
Looking out the window I don't ever remember coming here. I thought I'd been everywhere in Georgia, but I guess not here. After a while we pull up to this auto mechanic shop.
"This is it darling, I'll introduce you to Dean the main mechanic here." The officer says as we get out the vehicle and head towards the shop.
"Hello Officer." The mechanic heads out and greets the nice officer who's helped me.
"Hello Dean, this young lady has broken down on the side of the highway and needs a little help." The cop sort of explains my situation.
"Great my newest hire will be sure to fix her car good as ever." Dean reassures the officer.
"Alright, now miss if you need anything this nice guy will be willing to help you." Officer says reassuring me.
As he finishes talking my car pull up.
"Well now that I see you're in good hands, I'm a take my leave". The officer says tipping his hat." Dean, can I get your name ma'am?"
"Hazel" I respond.
"Well, Hazel you're in great hands my dear." The officer says before driving away.
Standing there for a minute after the officer leaves the mechanic Dean says, "Come with me I'll introduce you to the mechanic who will be working on your car".
Walking into the mechanic shop, I hear some wresting under one of the cars.
"Salvatore!" Dean calls the mechanic.
" Yes, boss?" The mechanic says as I see him coming from under the car.
" Salvatore, this young lady's car broke down on the side of the interstate and needs it fixed pronto." Dean explains to his worker. The worker stands up and looks over at me and gives me this weird look.
"Ok, boss but I'm working on this car for that family that's been waiting for week I'll get to it when I can." The other mechanic responds.
Dean looks at him weird but then just calmly responds" then he turns and looks at me and says" Salvatores here got you covered I'm out for the day."
Leaving me standing there with the mechanic kind of baffled.
"Well, my names Hazel." I say trying to break the awkward tension.
Kinda seeming like he's ignoring me u continue, "Well here's my keys, i'm going to be getting lunch at the diner then I'll check back in a few hours, ok?".
Ignoring me again I just put my keys down and walk away.
"My names Stefan". The only thing he says before I walk away.
