"Nice to meet you," I said and took in Robyn, a brown skinned woman with a nice smile and short fro-hawk. Black stud earrings adorned her ears complete with a black and red plaid shirt she paired with jeans and black hiking boots. She was giving me a quiet but mellow vibe. I could tell she was a couple years older than Normani but not in a way that was alarming. All of this was surprising to me, but I was here for it. I had to contain a grin.
"Robyn?" Whitney said, grabbing the room's attention. They know each other?
"Whitney," Robyn replied evenly.
"You know each other?" Normani and I asked in unison.
Whitney turned towards me. "Remember the girl I was telling you about?"
"Your ex?" I said, calling it what it was.
She nodded. "Yeah. That's her."
"It's in the past," Robyn said to Normani.
"Sure is," Whitney agreed.
"Wow, small world!" Normani said, putting on a laugh and glancing at me with wide eyes.
We all chuckled and expressed agreement of some kind.
Robyn chuckled. "So, Victoria, I know you're Normani's friend, but how do you know Whitney?"
"She works at Columbia," Whitney answered.
"Yup," I confirmed.
Robyn offered nothing but a "hmmm."
"V, did you wanna get food?" Whitney said, getting my attention. "I know a place near the venue."
"Sure, just let me get my stuff and I'll get us a car."
Now that I knew who Robyn was, my outlook on her was different. It's not deep because whatever they had was before me.
But do I want them to rekindle?
Nah.
As soon as I opened the door, Normani was standing right there, startling me. "Girl!"
"My bad. You okay?" she asked after we giggled.
"Yeah, I'm good, shit is just crazy..." I started lowering my voice, "she was just telling me about her."
"That is crazy. You think they're over each other?"
I looked up in thought. It did seem like they moved on, but I don't know for sure yet.
"I think so. We'll see...let's go..." I put my hands on her shoulders, guiding us back to the main area.
I didn't want Whitney and Robyn to be alone together for too long.
"Don't do her how you did me," Robyn was saying causing Normani to reach back and nudge me.
"I'm not. I'm not that girl anymore," Whitney said.
"We'll see."
We decided to stop eavesdropping.
"Hey," I said, making our presence known and resting my hand on Whitney's shoulder. "You don't wanna use the bathroom before we go?"
She looked at me and nodded. "Yeah, I'll be back."
I smiled at her and looked at Normani and Robyn. "So, ladies, is date night continuing?"
"You gotta ask her," Robyn said, staring at Normani.
Normani paused after a beat. "Be honest, are you really over her?"
Now we were both looking at Robyn, whose expression paled. "Yes, I am. Or I wouldn't be talking to you. And for what it's worth? I know she's over me too." She looked at me.
