"Of course I still love you," a high voice whined. "Why would you think otherwise?" His voice sounded tight and dry, barely audible to Sam.
As for Sam herself, she seemed more fixated on his words rather than his tone. Or maybe it was more accurate to say that she was enraptured more towards the meaning beyond Dave's words. She huffed and turned her head sharply away from Dave's direction.
"You never loved me. You can never love me." She hissed, barely a whisper. She clenched her arms tightly over her chest. "Therefore, we need space. I want time alone."
Dave audibly tried to gulp, his eyes remaining on Sam's face. Suddenly, Sam turned her whole body towards him with a degree of ferocity drenched in her tensed movements.
"I mean it." She said. "You're a stupid pig, barely worthy of being a creature. I hated you, always hated you!" Her voice was rising to a scream now. "I just want you to DIE AND NEVER COME BACK!"
A loud slap reverberated off the hill. The boy staggered backward with unbalanced footing, almost landing on his bum. He somehow maintained his stature and looked up with his hand on his cheek. His eyes were wet and bent in emotion. He opened his mouth and his lips, but no sound came from his throat.
Sam had walked away, her boots digging deep into the grassy tangles below her. Then an instant later, she turned and walked back around, towards Dave. Her hair covered her face as her neck stretched awkwardly and shamefully. With averted gaze, she walked into him gently, laying her crown against his neck.
Dave forcefully yanked himself away, causing Sam to tilt down towards the ground. With a yelp, she fell and gasped in pain as her leg impacted a hard rock, piercing her skin and bone past her clothes with the sharp jagged edges. With a huff, Dave lifted his knee with thin rivers trailing down his eyes, and his boot slammed into the back of Sam's head.
A moment of silence followed, then Dave fell over Sam's body, his arms wrapped over her form and his head resting on her soft back so her jacket could absorb the tears he was shedding. He sobbed, quietly at first. He petted Sam's back, then her head of hair, then her legs, and he whispered, "I really do love you," in barely a whisper.
Sam twitched and tried to speak, only resulting in a quiet, weak groan. She lifted her head; her neck was screaming and her face was red in liquid from the rocks. She was crying too. But she couldn't move, so she laid their, with her ex coddling her body.
