“You really think I could love a man like that?!” I tried to keep my cool, as Sherlock paced in front of me. “Honestly, Sherlock, you have no idea sometimes.”

I have no idea?!” he looked incredulously at me.

“Yes, you,” I agreed. “Mr Holmes needs to realise that sometimes people have ulterior motives.”

“I do realise this. Has it escaped your notice that I am, in fact, the world's leading expert on these matters.”

“Whoa there, Mr Ego,” I'd lost my cool now. “You're not even letting me finish.”

“You've been seeing a master criminal behind my back!” he scowled, ferociously flipping his coat in the air as he spun on his heel to pace in the other direction.

“And you still don't understand?” I laughed almost coldly. “Some great detective.”

“If I hadn't realised, you could have been killed!”

“I didn't need you to realise, Sherlock.”

“You could have died!” he reiterated, coming very close to my face.

“But I didn't, Sherlock,” I calmed now.

“What were you even doing there?! Are you stupid?! I mean, of course I always knew you were stupid compared to me, but almost everybody is. I thought you were at least a little more intelligent than that.”

“If only you listened,” I muttered.

“What does that mean?” something sinister flashed across his eyes.

“I'll repeat, do you really think I could love a man like that?”

“I know nothing of who you could love,” he stated.

“Believe me, I know,” I retorted, having known for a long time that he would never return my feelings for him.

“So your point is?” he seemed none the wiser.

“Sherlock, I didn't love him.”

“So why were you with him?”

“Because I knew that's what had to be done.”

“But you never told me his name. You never gave me any relevant information.”

“Not directly, no.”

Something changed in his expression, it softened as he started to listen properly.
