Off was a practical man, at least he considered himself to be one. He relied on calculated decisions and such reliance was not misplaced as everything in his life from his education to passion fell in the right place. But as it happens with anyone, this practical man also fell in trouble because of love. If we put it in a poetic sense, love belonged in the realm of heart and no amount of calculated decisions could help a man in love.
And yes! That all powerful and mysterious emotion is what tempted this so-called practical man to stroll on a Sunday morning because he thought the cold and freezing weather would be the best cure for a disturbed mind.
He felt distant. He felt unstable; his mind kept wavering. Cutting through the fog carefully so as to not to stumble upon anything, he felt he actually stumbled upon something. It wasn’t an object like a stone or a brig; it was a voice, a very sad one.
The voice said something that remained obscure to Off . A little later the voice broke into sobs.
Finding his way through the mist, Off could make out an apparition of a little figure sitting on a rock hugging his knees and patting something. Off went closer to inspect the little figure. Off’s approach didn’t startle the little one as he was preoccupied in his own thoughts. Until Off hesitantly touched the shoulders of the sobbing lad, he didn’t raise his head.Once Off saw the familiar face, he almost yelled with a tinge of worry sprinkled all over his voice. “GUN” The little one was taken aback but he gazed at Off’s face with apparent surprise.
“Gun what’s wrong? Why are you here? Why are you crying here alone?”
When the little guy didn’t respond, Off started throwing questions because he was worried, shaken and devastated seeing the familiar face wrought with pain. The little one still didn’t answer but was looking at Off with an expression that Off found hard to interpret. It wasn’t expressionless; it was as if happiness was mingled with sadness and there was also disbelief. The little guy shaking found it hard to express in words what he felt, instead he pulled Off closer in an embrace and started having a breakdown. The wails filled the whole place until the mist started to disappear gradually.
