I woke up to the sound of nails against the paper door, my paranoia from yesterday finally meeting its mark as I see a dark silhouette outside the door.

I was too scared to do anything so my first reaction was to pull the covers over my head and wish that it goes away, it should just be a wild dog or something no biggy! I just have to pray that it doesn't scratch through the paper door!

shhrrrrrrrk...

Ok what the HELL was that?!

I waited a few minutes to hear if the animal or person came into the room but nothing, I peeked over the covers to see the paper door slightly ajar.

"Ugh...why open it in the first place if you're just gonna run away..." I groaned and stood up to close it.

But then I saw something, something I never thought I would be seeing during my time on Earth, a man wearing a set of black and white kimonos and a kitsune mask, the most noticeable, however, was the golden nine tails protruding from his lower back and a set of long ears to pair with it.

His tail glistened in the moonlight and was so entrancing that I didn't realize I was staring, mouth wide open.

The man didn't say anything, just looked at me through the mask and ran off.

"Wait! Hold on!" I took my jacket and ran after the man, who, despite being a big entity thanks to his tails, was surprisingly hard to follow.

I didn't notice I was pretty damn deep in the woods until I reached an opening, I look back to see not even a trace of where I came from, long story short, I was l o s t.

I turn back and there lied ahead of me was a staircase that leads to a giant torii, the man was nowhere to be found either.

It was a bit chilly and scary, but I decided to walk through the gates to see if I can find a shrine or anything where monks live and ask for directions.

As soon as I walk through the doors, the red lanterns that lead to a shrine further ahead lit up one by one, the now dark area suddenly lighting up like a festival, the temple also lit up.

"I hope to God this is a prank from the neighbours." Despite my fear, I clutched my jacket and proceeded to walk towards the temple.

I could feel eyes all around me, did you know people can actually subconsciously feel if somebody is watching them? Because man do I feel hella on edge right now.

As I get closer and closer to the temple doors, the more I feel light-headed and weak in the knees.

"Ah."

THUMP

(Third person pov)

"Samu! What do we do?!" The golden hair boy panicked.

"I don't know, Tsumu! Do we give her an onigiri? do we pick her up? are we allowed to do that?" The silver hair boy responded.

"You guys what's going on?" Kita and the others walked over to the now-even-more-panicked twins.

"Kita-san it's not what you think!"  Atsumu held his hands up in defence.

The leader didn't bother and walked in between the twins to the girl laying on the floor, pale to the face and breathing heavily.

"Kita, it's a human girl..." Aran awed.

Kita bent down and picked up the girl as the twins face wince at the forbidden contact.

"We'll take her in for now, it'd be cruel to leave her out here in the cold." The members couldn't disagree with him so they all agreed to let her in the temple.

(Your pov)

I groaned as I slowly wake up, rubbing my eyes and stretching. 'oh, it was a dream.'

...was what I believed until I noticed that I wasn't in my room.

"Feeling better?"

"Yeah...wait who?!" The sudden realization shot me wide awake as I looked at the man dressed in similar kimono as the fox boy.

"Pardon me, my name's Kita Shinisuke, a monk in this temple, we found you passed out in front of it so we decided to take you in." His voice was so calming and silky, his slit pupils staring deep into mine.

"Oh, thank you so much! I'm not sure why I passed out, but I'm feeling a lot better now, my name's (Y/f/n)" I smiled.

"That's a relief to hear, so, how did you manage to find this place? It's quite far from society."

Should I tell him what I saw yesterday? Would he even believe me? Well, he is a monk so I wouldn't see why he wouldn't believe in yokai's, "Actually, there was something scratching at my door in the middle of the night and I go out to see a man with nine golden tails and a kitsune mask, out of curiosity I followed him and he lead me here." He blinked once when I mentioned 'a man with nine golden tails.

"Sometimes, curiosity can drive you into situations that make you wish you never encountered what made your curiosity peak."

"I mean, obviously but fortunately that wasn't the case here, though I did pass out, oh! Would you mind showing me the way back to the village? I just moved here yesterday so I know this place like the back of my head."

"Unfortunately, I'm not sure myself, I've never visited the village before,"

"Eh? So you just, stayed in this shrine your entire life?"

"I guess you can say that, I would be more than happy to let you stay until you manage to find your way back though?"

"That'd be really helpful, thank you."

-----------------------------

My attempts to get back was so confusing, I definitely walked in a straight line but somehow I always manage to return to the shrine.

I knew something was wrong, the man with the nine tails, passing out, the weird feeling I'm getting from the monk, and now the never-ending shrine maze, but what is causing all this?

"Any luck, (Y/n)?" I was snapped out of my thoughts by the monk's voice.

"No...for some reason whenever I try to get out I always come back here, does this have something to do with the yokai, Kita-san?"

"Yokais...a strange yet reasonable way of thinking, do you actually believe in the existence of yokai?" There was a sudden spike in the breeze and the rustling of leaves filled the air.

I gulped before answering, "based on what I saw yesterday, I'm pretty confident in the existence of yokai,"

"Kita-san...What actually happened yesterday?"
