sami stared at the clock. the time wasn't going any faster. there was still a good hour before school would be out.
the loud kids were yelling and running around, making unnecessarily loud noises. it made her annoyed. sure, talking was okay but why did they have to yell? it was two in the afternoon, definitely not the ideal time to be listening to annoying classmates. oh well, even if she told them to shut up, which she wouldn't, because she had social anxiety, they would call her a killjoy and say she didn't know how to have "fun".
if fun was screaming at each other, she didn't want to have fun. besides, she wasn't even that popular, just some wallflower who had a few friends. most of her classmates didn't care for her, and neither did she.
her only friend in her homeroom whispered about how loud the annoying brats were being. sami felt like she truly made a friend lf her own kin.
as soon as she was about to whisper a reply back, the teacher assigned for the period came in with a big box of paper. surely, those weren't test papers because this was only a extracurricular class.
everyone's interest piqued at the bunch of papers as the teacher called a few boys to help her with them.
ah, yes. the overlooked sexism in school.
sami just stared and wondered what they would be doing in the class, hoping it wouldn't be too bothersome. when would it finally be the end of school? she thought, sighing. her friend, rika seemed to sigh back in agreement.
finally, the teacher spoke up,
" today we'll be doing something very exciting!- "
just to be cut off by the loud cheers of the class and the overly enthusiastic whispers guessing what they'd be doing, only to be greatly disappointed,
" everyone's getting a penpal! "
half of the class was confused because they didn't even know what that was. sami was actually not dissapointed as much as she thought she would be and was intrigued by how her teacher even managed to get penpals for the whole class.
after quite a long time of the teacher explaining the concept of penpals, she finally continued after a exasperated look and continued talking about how good of a oppurtunity this was for making friends and all that. no one was actually interested and sami felt a little pity for the teacher trying her best in front of the class.
" i'll be all giving you a letter. third and second years from fukurodani have written a letter and whoever's letter you get will be your penpal. no switching, please. and make sure to write back a reply and submit it to me after three days. i need them to be sent to fukurodani academy. do i make myself clear? "
the letters were being distributed. some of her classmates were hoping for hot boys or girls to be their penpals. fukurodani academy was an elite school, after all. on top of that, the school was located in tokyo, far from miyagi.
johzenji was a normal school far from the cities. of course, there was also shiratorizawa which was in par with the schools from tokyo.
sami finally got a letter passed to her. it was an white envelope with to, my dear penpal !!!!! written. she could tell already that it was a loud person.
everyone else had already opened theirs so she figured that she'd do so too.
HEY!! pen friend :) i'm the ace of volleyball, BOKUTOKOTAROŪ ! NICE TO MEET YOU ! ( i'm in the top 5 aces of japan, i miised the top 3 by jussssssst a bit ) oh, but this is a letter so i'm not actually meeting you, right? BACK TO WHAT I WAS SAYING, i am a third year in fukurodani academy!! you know my school, right? i hope you do :D are you a boy? or a girl?
girls don't talk to me very much :( but our team's manager's are nice too!
so, how are you? i have never written a letter before!! isn't this fun? maybe we can be friends and you can cheer for me during games ! i'm gonna be the top ace one day and you can say that you're japan's top ace's friend ! i'm also the captain of our school's team !
my teacher didn't allow us to send a picture but i did anyway. i just cropped my face from a group picture with my friends but it's small so the teacher ( hopefully ) can't notice! i hope he can't!!

i have to go because akaashi is telling me to study math ughh. i'm very good in math, by the way!!
BYE BYE, PEN FRIEND! WRITE BACK TO ME SOON :D
oh and akaashi is my bestie who also plays volleyball with me!!!!!!!!
sami was definitely not expecting that. fukurodani's volleyball captain and a third year? he had a strange way of writing too.
maybe he was different in person.
who knows? but the letter definitely did make her feel a little happy. it was cute, like a third grader had written it. bokuto koutaroū didn't look bad too. it was obvious from the roughly cut, tiny photograph he had sneaked in. it was the size of a passport picture. sami, at first, was debating to just throw away the picture but then decided against it. the boy who had sent her the letter and her designated "pen friend" seemed kind of adorable.
wouldn't it be too cruel? the letter was also kind of messy with small doodles and some crossed out letters but she could tell that bokuto was excited.
she would've never thought that she was reading a third year's letter.
"yūji, shut up, will ya ?"
terushima yūji, some one she'd never even looked at, much less spoken to yelled loudly, "did anyone get fukurodani's male volleyball captain's letter?"
