2.

I'm deep in thought all through the night. That power was scary. Very scary. To wield something like that is a massive responsibility.  And I don't really want it. Not now, anyway. I can't handle magic very well. Others might, but not me.

I get up out of the bed, throwing a glance at Gaius, then creep to the table and grab the book, then I go out into the moonlight and make my way deftly out of the gate. The guards are sleepy. So sleepy that I manage to creep past them, then follow some sense to a lake that flows near the city. I cit down beside a tree and the moonlight shines onto the book.

I flick through the pages, trying to find what I'm looking for, then smile happily. Page 22, chapter 12 - how to destroy the ring.

This book says that I have to take it back where it was made and throw it into the fire to destroy it. I nod, then smile. It's too easy. I just need a way to get to this 'fire.'

I jump at a noise in the bush as a stick cracks, then, leaping up, I turn around and come face to face with Merlin.

"You scared the... living daylights out of me!" I say, frowning at him. "What are you doing here?"

"Following you." He shrugs. "I have a sort of... ability, like another sense that..."

"Yeah, whatever." I shrug. I flick the book back at him. "Thank Gaius for me."

"Wait, you're leaving?" He asks, confused.

"I have to. I..." I can't tell him of my plans. "I need to go and see my... relatives. They live somewhere around here. I think I"ve over stayed my welcome in Camelot anyway."

"Hmm..." He flicks through the book, then his eyes land on page 22. "You're trying to destroy the ring?"

I sigh. "I don't want the power. It's too much."

"But with every power comes a destiny. Come." He starts dragging me again.

"Where are we going?!" I protest.

"I'm taking you to someone who knows about destiny."

"OK, this is creepy." I shiver as we head down a dark tunnel. We go out onto a thin ledge, where he stops. Suddenly there's a great noise, like the whooshing of wind only about 1000 times louder, and a huge dragon lands on a rock near us.

"Aaaa!" I jump back. "A dragon?! There's a dragon down here?!"

"Shh!" Merlin says loudly.

"What is it this time, young warlock?" The dragon eyes me. "She is the second person to set eyes on me since my imprisonment."

"I'm right here." I say indignantly.

"Please," Merlin breaks in. He shows the dragon the ring. "What..."

The dragon's laugh fills the cave. "The ring is powerful." It concludes. "But not nearly as powerful as your magic, Merlin."

"But what about the force?" Merlin asks. "The binding, metaphysical..."

"I know, that too is extremely powerful."

"She has it!" Merlin bursts out.

"What? No I don't!" I say.

The dragon turns his great head around. "You may deny it all you like, young one, but you do have it."

"What about her destiny?" Merlin bursts out eagerly. "She wants to destroy it all if she gets rid of that ring."

"Your power is within you." The dragon says. "But the ring is extremely powerful. With it, you can exceed any limitation. If you destroy the ring, then your power will be limited."

"I don't want power!" (I can't believe I'm talking to an animal?!) "I don't want any of this. I just want to be normal."

"I wanted to be normal too." Merlin says. "Here, I have to hide my magic. I can't let anyone know that I have it without risking death. But this dragon has taught me that it was my destiny. It is my destiny to protect Prince Arthur."

"I cannot tell you your destiny, young one. Merlin's destiny has been written for generations. Yours I do not know. But it is your choice to do what you must."
