The second she stepped in the room, the sound of water splashing loudly over her head and the imminent silence that loomed after was what occurred. She stood in disbelief and embarrassment, water drops dripping from her soaked being. Her coworkers gawked at her, none stepping up to the plate to confess the crime or even offer some assistance. After what seemed like eons, she summed up enough courage- and what was left of her dignity to turn around and walk away, calmly and mutely. It wasn't until her presence disappeared from their vision that they began to break out in whispers and gossip.
"Did you see that? She looked like a pitiful cow!"
"It's unfortunate she arrived at that very moment..."
"Oh come off it, you should just admit that was entertaining!"
She clenched her fists and walked away to her small but adequate locker for a new set of clothes. As for her hair, she simply dried off with a towel and left it damp. As expected, when she returned to the main office, none of the cohorts dared to lock eye contact with her, instead focusing on their own work.
"You're all childish. Playing pranks on a fellow coworker? It shows not even an ounce of your brain has fully matured yet," she said coolly. She was fuming on the inside, wishing they all dropped dead. She sauntered to her personal office, ignoring rising, taunting remarks thrown at her.
Frustrating, she thought, whilst biting her bottom lip. Habitually, she stared at her work phone and by some magical chance, it rang. Was it possibly Pein?
She shook her head in denial. It wouldn't do well on her standing to accept a social call during work. Her eyes scrutinized her surroundings for possible nosy eavesdroppers, only to find none. Her nimble fingers wrapped around the work phone and held it to her ear.
"Hello, [Name] Shizumi speaking," she answered smoothly, her tone crisp and clear.
"Oh my, seems like Princess has grown up," Pein replied with jest, chuckling softly.
"Pein, I'm working now!" she whispered frantically into the mouthpiece. Her eyes strayed to the door, daring for someone to march in.
"I sensed you needed someone to talk to," he responded cryptically. "How are you feeling?"
She smiled ruefully and sighed. "It's like you're psychic or something. I'm angry right now, actually. My coworkers are immature brats who love nothing more than insist on badgering me."
"Does this call for a knight to save his Princess?"
"Maybe," she prolonged her answer slowly. She was grinning and put to ease just from his joke.
"I'll take care of them for you," he said lowly, dark intent underlying his words.
