Chapter 3
Amara's pov:
The first day of school was finally over. "Hey girl! How did everything go the rest of the day?" Lunch was a nightmare. Caleb and the rest of the warriors in the pack were tense and staring down Jackson, and his group of friends, like he just killed someone. Thankfully this jock was oblivious to the world. Although, I caught him staring at me a few times with a little smirk. That didn't seem to make Caleb any better. I'm just glad this day is over and I can throw some punches at said Beta, because this was some bs.
"let's just get back to the house. We have to get to training." She let me be, seeing the annoyance on my face. Today was Jess' first day of training, where I started a few weeks after my mom passed away. Nothing too severe, I was only six. I'm at the same level as my father, in human form at least. We shall see what my level is tomorrow.
The training was already starting, since only a hand full of us were still in school. Jess and I ran inside to change into our yoga pants and sports bras. I wore my black yoga pants, with a neon purple sports bra. Jess had on all yellow. She was the bubbly, makeup, outgoing type, where I was well not all of that.
"Isn't this exciting?? I am so excited! And next week I shift! Aren't you excited? Ugh. I cannot wait." I couldn't help but laugh because she had no clue what was about to happen. She would soon find out when her butt would be sitting in a tub of ice. Jess and I did our handshake and went our separate ways.
I started with my 10 lap warm up, 20 push ups, 20 pull ups and joined the rest of my group. Again I was picked up and escorted away from my destination. "What do you think you're wearing?" I seriously don't know what side of the bed he woke up on this morning, but he really needs to fix whatever his problem is. "What is wrong with you today, Caleb? There is nothing wrong with what I'm wearing now or what I wore to school. You've been acting like an ass all day and you're being possessive." He ran his right hand through his hair. I noticed he wasn't wearing a shirt, and had on low rising shorts. He must have just shifted back.
I've never noticed how in depth his stomach was. Stop. What am I doing? I must have been staring too long because he took a few steps back and walked off. What. The. Actual. F**k. He's always been like the bigger brother and protective, keeping the older guys away, but this is a new level. I rolled my eyes and jogged back to the group. No one questioned what happened. They knew better.
"Hello Alpha" I greeted my father as he approached the group. He nodded in response, observing the progress of the days training. "Alright Amara, tomorrow is your shift. Let's see how far you've come. Caleb, step up and spar." The Warrior Head stepped out of the ring, and nodded for us to begin. I was not holding back, my anger clear on my face. How could he act that way today? Act like that towards Jackson? He doesn't even know him! Okay, I don't even know him, but... I want to... Wait, what?
I block his punch. I block his kick. I flip back. I kick him in the side. He punches my right cheek. Ever watch the Avengers? I did the move Black Widow did on that one bad guy when she jumps on his shoulders and swings him to the ground. I'm on top of him and we are both heavy breathing. We're staring into each others eyes. Something has changed here, but I don't understand what or why.. or when.
"Nice work, Amara, you have learned well" my father seemed proud. "Walk with me". I got off the ground, reaching my hand out to help Caleb up. "Can we talk later, please?" I slowly shook my head to signal yes, before running to catch up with my father. He was walking towards my moms favorite place on our territory. It was this small lake, that had all these different size rocks and beautiful night flowers. She would sit and listen to the water for hours. It's also where she would practice her magic. Such a peaceful place. It's where we buried her.
"It's your sixteenth birthday tomorrow." I nodded my head in agreement. "Your mother would be so proud of the woman you are becoming. Such a strong warrior. I know it's not until tomorrow, but I wanted to give you this. She would have given this to you on your sixteenth birthday." He handed me a medium sized, handmade, notebook and a locket that had a picture of all three of us. "They were both your mothers. She wrote down her spells and healing potions and medicines. Turning sixteen does not just mark your shift, but also your power as a witch. We thankfully have some here in our pack, that are waiting for you to help grow. You are going to be powerful." As he handed me the items, tears were slowly falling down my cheeks. I missed her so much. "I miss her. She...I wish it were me instead." My father turned to me and yanked me to him. "Don't you EVER say that again. She was the love of my life, my mate, but neither of us would have wanted to lose you. This was not your fault. There was nothing you could have done."I slowly nodded in agreement. My father kept his arm around my shoulder, while wiping the tears away.
"Now, we are having a celebration for you tomorrow after school. When you get home, get dressed and meet everyone in the backyard. It's going to be set up for the celebration of both Lilly and your life. My Princess, she would be so proud of you. Have a look at the book and see what she wrote for you. I haven't opened it." My father gave my shoulder a squeeze and left me to my thoughts.
I took a seat by the lake, and started to read. It was a journal that had notes, spells, medicine ingredients. It had so much information. There was one when she met my father! She was called to this pack house to help heal an Alpha. He had been poisoned with a new strain of wolfsbane. She wrote down the pull of the mate bond, how she felt so drawn to him. She immediately ran to him when she saw him laying in the hospital bed. He held up one arm, and embraced her. My mother wrote "You found me. I get to see you before this ends. The Goddess has humor". My mother continues to write that she told him to knock off the negative talk and she would heal him. She put down three ingredients: Nymphea 'Red Flare' Water Lily, Datura Moonflower, and for whatever reason the lake water from behind the pack house. She gathered these ingredients, with the help of my fathers Beta, Joseph, and saved him. He was healed immediately.
She saved him. She was so powerful. Am I ever going to be like her?
I kept reading... There was so much! Herbs and teas for injuries we couldn't heal from, anxiety, sleep, helping with other issues for the pack mates that haven't shifted yet. She was so powerful and had so much knowledge. She wrote everything down, thankfully. "I'm so sorry mom, I wish you were still here. I hope I can make you proud." As I said this a gust of wind blew by me, sweeping up my hair around my body. I looked up to the sky, to see the moon rising right over the lake making the water glow a pure white. The tears flew down my cheeks again, as I grabbed the book to my chest. "I know you're here. Please watch over me tomorrow. Please help me be the best Alpha I can be. Mom, everything is changing so fast. Caleb is acting different, and I feel scared I may be losing him. He isn't my mate... Well, I don't know. I won't know until I'm eighteen, but that has never been heard of an Alpha and Beta, Although an Alpha has never been a female. I can't deny my feelings mom. I know I would accept him in a heartbeat. Would he accept me? Ha, I need to stop. I don't even know why I'm thinking like this all of a sudden. Neither of us can feel that way. What if we both felt that way and gave in? And then we weren't mates? Then one of us found our mate, the other would be heartbroken for who knows how long. It just.. isn't worth it. ha. Mom, I wish I could talk to you and hug you and get your advice. I remember your advice, even when I was six. Father still tells me stories once in a while about you and it's great. Thank you for leaving me this book and I will never take off this necklace. I can already feel the magic radiating off of it. It's protected I bet. Ha. I bet I can shift in it, too." I just laid on the ground, with my knees bent, looking up at the sky. I held the book on my stomach, and felt my eyes slowly close.
