I looked across the room to see Kayla. Claire sat on my lap trying to get my attention. Brad noticed me starring at her and pushed Claire off of me.
"Dude just ask her out." He said quietly.
"No she probably doesn't even like me. Like she is pretty and smart while I don't have anything for her to like." I said turning away. Brad new about my crush on her.
It started back in middle school and now she's a freshmen and I'm a junior. Back then her group would always sit by mine. She sat next to me unless one of the people in her class sat by us. She never looked my way and when she did it was when I sat at the other end of the table. She never liked me. Always commenting when her friends made a joke about me. She was kind too. Always talking to people who got left out. Trying to make other people happy. She never seemed happy herself though. Having her arms crossed all the time and didn't smile unless she was talking to her friends or about something she liked. Kayla didn't have the best athletic skills or social skills. In basketball she was to timid. Volleyball she was slow to reacting unless it was at recess. In soccer she couldn't run for long but she always took on the bigger people and tried her best always having enough energy to keep on going. And in softball she wasn't the best at batting. She can't really talk to people but always tries to think the best of people if she doesn't know them.
"Nate the bell rang let's go." Brad said. I zoned back into the real world and went to my next class.
At the end of the day I was walking home when I noticed Kayla across the street skipping next to her friend Rain. Rain scowled at her making Kayla laughed and spin in circles. Rain stopped her and let go watching Kyla stumble the grumble about not spinning anymore. They took the next turn and I went the opposite way. I frowned when I noticed my parents gone. They were barely home. I set my stuff down and went to my grandparents house.
"Nathanial about time you came to visit." My grandma said.
"Yeah well I have been busy with school stuff." I said.
"Oh well so how's trying to get that girl." She said.
"She still probably doesn't know I exist."
"Well come help me with supper the neighbor girl is coming over to help me with my flowers." She said going to the kitchen to start cooking when the bell rang. I went to get it and there stood Kayla.
"Oh hello you must be Mrs. Petersons grandson." She said letting her bangs fall in front of her face acting like a curtain between us. They were dyed a dark blue today. She has been dyeing her bangs to match her mood or outfit.
"Kayla come in. Nathanial bring her to the living room for a bit." Grandma said. I led her through the house and sat down on the couch while she sat on the chair across the room. She looked everywhere but me.
"Okay Kayla let's go plant some flowers." Grandma said. She followed her outside and I sat watching the soccer game that was on.
After awhile they came back in laughing. They went to the kitchen then came back out sitting on the chairs across the room.
"Did he really do that." Kayla said.
"Yes and he fell right on his butt after." Grandma said laughing.
"Well I have to go bey Rose." Kayla said leaving with a juice box in hand.
"Oh isn't she just the sweetest." Grandma gushed.
"Yeah whatever she's just a freshman." I said acting like I didn't care for her.
"Well she may just be a freshman and you a junior but grades shouldn't define who you like."
"What you want her for a granddaughter. Is that it?"
"No not at all I just think you would be cute together." She said going to the kitchen again. I sighed pulling out my phone to text Brad.
'Hey my grandma is bugging me about dating her neighbor'
'Well doesn't that suck my g-ma is making me cookies'
'Well mine is making me supper'
'Oh cookies and hot chocolate gtg'I sighed putting my phone down on the table and laying on the couch looking for a different Chanel since the game was almost over. But soon as I found one I started to fall asleep.
She was sitting chatting with Mia about some youtuber they found cute. We sat in the Zyp house waiting for the movie to start. I sat in my normal chair while she sat right next to me on the couch. Her bangs a faint pink.
"No he isn't that cute." She said.
"Yes he is common you have to agree with me on that." Mia said.
"Nope you already got me to like Teen Wolf. And JC pluse that other guy." She said crossing her arms turning to looking out the window where the sun was setting. Her eyes light up at the sight and a small smile formed on her face.
"Okay guy the movie's starting." Mike said. We all turned and watched.
When the movie ended her and three other girls had to go to basketball. When they left we played some games for 10 minutes then left saying bye to each other. The next day she wasn't there. Mia sat next to me and was just being really creepy. Her, Rain, and Paige would just look at me for a brief moment. Its no different then usual just Mia was being really creepy.
"Nathaniel wake up" my grandma said. I sat up and looked at her only to see Kayla walk out of the kitchen.
"Time to eat." Kayla said.
"Let's go get some food then." Grandpa said walking in.
"Oh hi Louis." She said.
"Kayla dear how have you been?"
"Um okay. What about you?"
"Getting better. I think I just needed to see a bright smile." He said making Kayla smile bigger.
