The day you turn 18 you are connected to your soulmate through music, you can hear whatever music they listen to. Everyone has a different experience with this, most not even acknowledging their soulmates until they find them, that however was not the case for Layla and Harry.

"Layla love, I have your birthday breakfast waiting for you." My mom called from downstairs, I smiled a little my face pressed against my pillow as I stretched out in my bed. "Gimme a minute." I called down as I rolled over, my hair fell in my face and I chuckled a little bit. "Happy birthday." I heard my brother Evan say from the hallway outside my bedroom door, I sat up quickly when I heard his voice. "Evan??" I called out as I shot up, I grabbed a cardigan to throw over my tank top and shorts I'd gone to bed in before whipping my door open to see my older brother Evan who had been deployed in Afghanistan for two years. "Happy birthday Layla." He said happily, I smiled widely and threw my arms around him. "When did you get home??" I asked excitedly, he squeezed me a little tighter. "Last night, mom had to pick me up from the airport after you went to bed so you wouldn't hear me." He chuckled, I smiled and pulled back to look at him. "How long are you home for this time?" I asked, he chuckled and messed up my hair. "Until I get deployed somewhere else, at least 3 months." He replied as I smoothed out my hair, I froze and looked at him with a big smile. "Does that mean you'll be here for my graduation?" I asked softly, he nodded and I squealed in delight as I hugged him again. "I was so worried you wouldn't get to see me do it." I whispered to him, he gave me another squeeze. "I wouldn't miss it for the world kid." He replied, I giggled and pulled back smelling pancakes and bacon. "Yum, Birthday breakfast." I said to him softly, he shoved me a little. "I'll race ya." He chuckled as he started to run down the stairs, I ran after him and jumped on his back. "HA. Can't win the race if I cross at the same time as you." I laughed as he ran, we came crashing into the kitchen loudly as mom put our food on the table. "God it's like you never left Evan." She chuckled, it sounded like she was complaining but she was obviously very happy to have Evan back. "Okay Layla, come on." My dad said from his position at the table, I smiled and hopped off Evans back before walking over and sitting down at the table with the others. "Happy birthday honey." My mom said as she placed a gift on the table, I smiled widely. "Thank you guys..." I said softly as I began to unwrap it, as I tore the wrapping paper off I began to see a gorgeous leather bound journal with my name on the front as well as new guitar pics. "Guys, I love it..." I mumbled as I took it out and studied the journals gorgeous leather exterior. "Check inside Layla." My mom said, I looked at them for a moment before opening the journal and flipping opening it up revealing cash. "Guys..." I mumbled. "That's to give you a bit of a boost when you move to New York." My dad smiled, I looked at them and smiled a little. "You guys... I can't take this..." I said softly, my brother smiled and placed a hand on my shoulder. "We all know how much you've been busting your ass to save up for New York and school so we all pitched in, the whole family. Grandma and Grandpa wanted to make sure they got to help as well. All the others said they sent money in their cards." He smiled, I laughed a little as my eyes began to water. "What's wrong?" My dad asked softly, I smiled a laughed softly. "I just really love you guys." I replied, my brother chuckled. "Stop crying you baby." He said punching me before wiping away his tears, I laughed and kicked him as we ate.

I sat in my English class working on an essay when my friend Katy turned around to look at me. "So, have you heard any music from your soulmate yet?" She asked, I looked up from my work and shook my head. "No, not yet." I replied, she sighed. "Not anything? It's been like eight hours since you woke up." She replied, I laughed a little. "You seem more concerned about my soulmate than I am." I chuckled, she grinned. "Well on my birthday I heard music in the first two hours." She replied, I shrugged. "Maybe mine's in a different time zone." I replied as the bell rang, she laughed as we packed up. "Good point, I hadn't thought about that." She said as we stepped into the hallway, I chuckled as we walked through the halls. "That's why I have a 4.0 GPA and you don't." I joked, she scoffed as we walked towards the theatre. "Rude." She replied, I smiled. "I'll see you tonight." I said as she walked out to her car and I stepped into the theatre for rehearsal. "Happy birthday!" Everyone yelled, I laughed a little and before I could thank them they were singing Happy birthday in a four part harmony. "Wow, thank you guys." I chuckled after they finished, we all chatted for a while before getting into rehearsal. "Ok, Layla and Sam let's run "Tonight." Mr. Jensen requested, I got up and walked on stage with Sam before we started our number. " Tonight, tonight, It all began tonight, I saw you and the world went away. Tonight, tonight, There's only you tonight, What you are, what you do, what you -" I trailed off when I started to hear some pop song, I looked around confused when I could suddenly hear random pop music over Sam and the band. "Layla, are you ok?" Sam asked, I looked at him confused. "Do you- do you not hear that?" I asked still hearing the music, he shook his head confused. "Layla, are you ok?" Mr. Jensen questioned, I nodded a little. "Yeah I um, I think I'm just hearing my soulmate listen to music for the first time.." I replied awkwardly, he nodded and smiled. "Well congrats, you'll get used to it eventually. Can we start again?" He asked, I nodded. "Sorry about that." I said softly, he smiled. "No problem, just try to ignore it." He responded as we reset.
