She opened her eyes to a white room. She felt a constraint on her hand. Bolting up to examine the peculiar place she could feel the sickness in the air as she breathed in and it very much contrasted the marble white room. 'W...w...wait... Am I in a hospital?' she questioned herself internally. Feeling a sting around her wrist she looked down. 'But I'm cuffed to the bed...shit... It's a mental institution...' She continued having this mental debate over her current location until she heard the door click open.
Her nerves started to fill her chest due to not knowing what to expect. She was staring at the door intently and she saw a man with dark brown hair and a tall stature walk in. Startled at the look she was giving him, he jumped a little. Finally he was pushed in by two hands and a second person entered the room. He was also a boy but he was about average height and weight. The boy had strawberry blond hair and the greyest, most crystalized eyes she had ever seen. Seeing the girl awake the boy ran to her side before turning to the other male who was presumably the doctor.
"I believe we would like some time alone." he commanded. The doctor, simply nodding, left the room.Then... there was silence. The air was tense, so tense that a train could pass through it. For about five minutes they stared at each other's eyes. The girl looked at his reflective grey orbs that shimmered and changed colours whilst he looked into her aquamarine blue eyes that would waver ever so slightly. Finally she spoke,
"Hello, could you please tell me where I am. I'm dying to know why I'm chained to a bed instead of at the train station." The boy only continued to stare until he blinked and realized the question- and the sass."Oh, yeah... You're at the Bispebjerg Hospital in Copenhagen. I brought you here from the station, I saw your cuts on your arms... Oh I forgot, I'm Kristaps Sørensen but you can call me Kris or Christopher since that's my name in English." he explained in the most casual, clear, yet Danish tinted accent. Kris smiled at the girl and she had a hint of a smile on her face and she continued to do so until an expression washed over face and something finally hit her.
"My notebook!" She whispered under her breath. Frantically she looked around the room. She started to hyperventilate at the prospect of losing her precious book. It was her courage, her safety, her world. It was the only thing that had got her this far. She was terrified at not being able to feel the pale, brown roughness of the leather cover or smell the scent of the ancient ink on paper. Just before she had lost all hope, Kris giggled and explained.
"If you're looking for your notebook then you don't have to worry darling. It's safe with me. I read it before we got here and you planned everything out, you're very smart. I wanted to see if it had any of your personal information in it that would have helped with your situation at the time but when I was reading it I understood that you don't want to be found out. By anyone." Then he paused for a bit expecting her to say something but all she did was stare back with a threatening glare; she would have punched him but currently her hands were cuffed to the bed.
"Ok listen I understand you don't really know what's going on, and I know you don't want to be sent back to America or Russia. So I told the authorities that you were my sister that got stolen from the hospital when we were new-borns." He was starting to feel really concerned because for the past five minutes the girl hadn't said anything. She was still staring at Kris and it was making him very uncomfortable. The air was getting thicker with every second. Finally Kris huffed and spoke, "Do you have anything to say to this?"
Finally. She opened her mouth and spoke.
"Well you're a nosey boy. Exactly how much of my notebook did you read and what exactly did you tell the authorities?" Still very stoic yet entrained by this 'Kristaps' she raised her eyebrow to signify her question. She was very angry at the fact that he went through her notebook but she was also glad that he helped her with a lie. The question was, how big of a hole had she been dug into?"Well I read all the notes and instructions. As for what I told the police and doctors, well... You see... I was a twin but sadly the night that my sister and I were born, she was kidnapped. We were just born so we weren't even named. After all these years I haven't seen her but my mother said that she thinks she would have looked exactly like her because I look exactly like my dad. So I guess when I saw you I thought you might have been her, you look like the spitting image of my mother. So when I went to the hospital I told them you were my long lost sister I found in Riga and you fainted on the train to Copenhagen. I also noticed in your plan that you wanted to start a new life in Copenhagen and become a Dane. Well you see I'm Danish and I always wanted a sister. This way I would hit two birds with one stone. You would have the nationality and a backstory and I would be with the sister I never had." At this point he had a big smile. But with every second she stared him down with pure anger and disappointment, his smile turned into a frown.
She was not just angry! She was furious! How dare he tell basically all of Denmark that she was his sister!
"What gives you the right!? I should have made that decision on my own! Now I can't go back on that!" she shouted. She was fuming, she was on fire. But looking at Kris who was now curled up in a little ball on the floor from her shouting, she stopped and felt bad for him. He did try his best for her and this is how she thanked him. Still with a bit of anger in her voice, she tried her best to say the next part gratefully, "Ok, I'm sorry I lost my temper but what should I do now? I mean how long will I be here and what am I going to do once we leave this place?" she questioned him.Starting to come out from his position he replied.
"Well you see it was very weird... All I had to say was that I swear you were my sister and they believed me....So... Yeah, basically your doctor will come in and ask you a few questions, then I get to take you home. I live near here so it's not that far. Oh I almost forgot! Since my sister was taken at birth, she never got a name. So you can pick one! But your last name has to be Sørensen since that's my family name. However you have to pick a name from this list of Danish names. It's just the law." Now Kris was no longer crawled up but he was really excited to have a sister. He was eighteen but he never had a sister. Anxious to hear his 'sister's' name he leaned in.She was excited, yet scared and nervous. She would be living with a man she doesn't really know and she was starting anew. "Why should it be Danish?" She questioned. The girl was actually happy with her choices but she just was curious.
He sighed. A little bit sad at her question but he answered regardless, "Well in Denmark it's actually the law to have a Danish name so they can preserve the naming culture. But I like to think of it as our mother was Danish-Latvian and our father was Danish-Romanian and they are no longer with us. I guess it would be a kind of respect...."
He was looking down. The girl noticed this immediately and spoke to cheer him up, "That's really sweet. I will pick a respectable name. I mean these are my parents now." She thought long and hard and stared at her paper for a while. When she had decided she looked up and smiled at her new brother and finally spoke," You know it is really nice meeting you... brother. I've decided my name now. My name is..."
