~Dear Diary, Today is the day. We spent all last night on this stupid plane, I literally could not sleep one bit ( Dean was snoring ALL NIGHT), I hate planes so I'll be very glad once we get off, then again I'll never see Georgie and Wally again. They're my only friends. I really don't understand why dad decided to come live in Washington state, we were all happy living in Georgia with uncle Robbie and his dog Stubs, gosh I miss Stubs so much already. I also miss all the friends I left behind, Sandra and Gia and the rest of them. If dad needed a job so badly he could've just taken the offer Uncle Robbie made him. Working at an office doesn't sound so bad. Anyways, after we get to the airport, Grandma will pick us up and take us to the raspberry farm. Did I mention I also hate the smell of raspberries? And we're gonna live there for a few weeks, or months, or maybe even years until dad finds a stable job, she'll pay dad a suitable allowance until then (Idk why, she practically hates him). I'm so tired, I think I'm gonna take a nap.~
She put her diary in her bag under the chair and closed her eyes, drifting off almost immediately. She opened her eyes to see neon colors flying all around her head, bright oranges and blues, fluorescing magentas and greens, her head was spinning and apparently so was her body, and suddenly it all came to a stop, the colors faded and dimmed, everything went quiet, Jolyne's heartbeat quickened as she stepped back, suddenly the floor of the plane softened into grass and she was running through a dark forest, a light looming behind her " The vow has been broken, the price must be paid" a frighteningly soft yet cruel voice called to her. Her footsteps slowed, she suddenly felt compelled to look behind her, she looked back.
Ding Dong " You have arrived in Seattle, Washington." "Jolyne, we're here." she heard "Wake up lazy ass, you should've slept last night" Dean, her twin brother, shook her awake "Ugh, Dean, remind me why I sat next to you?" he looked at her, "Because you have social anxiety?" she rolled her eyes as he snickered, "Anyways, the plane landed" she rubbed her eyes and looked around at the people getting off the plane "Where's dad?" " He must be out by now. I think." She grabbed her stuff and stood up. Jolyne made a mental note to never sit in the back of an airplane, the line to get out takes so overwhelmingly long, she almost fell asleep a second time. She was pretty sure she heard the captain say a pun about the plane landing or something, but she was too tired to pay attention. When they finally got out, they went to try and find their dad. " Hey Dean you should probably call dad." " Why don-" she glared at him " Okay, jeez" he dialed the number and called " Hey dad... Oh... okay we'll wait... okay bye dad" he hung up "What's wrong?" Jolyne asked " Oh dad said it'll be a while till grandma gets here so he said he'll stay outside to see her car, he wants us to get the bags now" " Yeah, whatever" she responded "Hey, Jo look over here" Dean pointed at a sign "Couldn't you go for some Burger King right now?" Jo grinned " Hell yeah!" She checked in her pockets for money " I've got like 17 bucks and--" she counted " 63 cents, how much d'you got?" he checked his pockets and took out a few coins " Um, I got like, 78 cents and a gum wrapper" her smile dissipated " God, you're so stupid, how many times did I tell you to bring all your money!" " I did bring all my money!" he shouted "But I bought a lot of stuff before getting on the plane..." he said, pointing at his neck pillow, and opened his bag to show how utterly full of candy and junk it was " Want a jolly rancher?" "You are literally the dumbest person I know" she retorted, he rolled his eyes " Just buy me whatever"
. . . .After eating they decided they should probably go get the bags that by now had gone around the loop like three or four times. "Which one's ours again?" he asked, she looked at him "They're the only ones there." " Oh, yeah" they grabbed the two suitcases and walked outside. "Ah yes, the smell of cigarettes, gasoline and urine, one of the many reasons I hate airports" "You hate everything, don't you?" Dean mumbled, she looked around at all the people who were smoking " Now which one is my father" her eyes fell on a tall buff guy wearing a white camo pattern shirt, long jeans and worn out Nikes " There he is" she walked towards him, Dean coming behind her, with his head down, looking at his phone " Hey dad" he spun around with an awkward smile on his face " Hey Jo! Why aren't you inside? You should probably get something to eat" Wow he is trying really hard to get rid of us she thought " We already did" she replied " I just thought since you're out here maybe you can carry the bags?" he looked sort of disappointed " Oh, okay..." "We'll keep waiting inside" she said already walking away "Wait before you go, I need, a favor." he pulled Jolyne aside and pulled a bag with some green pellets out " Is tha-?!" he covered her mouth " Hey shhh, one of my friends back in Georgia gave it to me, and I hid it so the airport security wouldn't catch me, so don't get it confiscated now, I need to sell it for some extra cash" he whispered " I want you to hide it somewhere, you know how big Mom's house is, just take it so she doesn't find it on me, and hide it somewhere she won't look" he handed it to her, she stared at him " What the hell dad." he winced " Just do it please" she looked at him " What do I get out of this?" he looked at her " Do it for me?" she looked at him expectantly " Fine, I'll give you some of the money..." she stayed with her hand extended " And?" He sighed " You can have the attic bedroom" she took the little bag from his hand " Jeez, why do I agree to these things, I'm your dad..." he smiled "We good?" she looked at him " I guess" she put the bag into her hoodie pocket and walked inside.
. . . .
"God grandma's finally here" Jolyne said, seeing her dad's text " I wonder what took her so long." She exited her Jeep, and we saw her in all her glory, graying blonde hair tied back in a braided bun, her flowy black shirt and skinny jeans made her look a lot younger than she really was. As far as Jolyne and Dean remember, she hasn't changed since they first saw her a few years back, which was pretty scary. She looked at Jo and Dean "Where's my hug?" she smiled, they hugged and she turned to their dad " Earnest Isaiah Starling, I heard from your brother Robert that you started smoking again" he rolled his eyes " It's not such a big deal mom" she squinted "Maybe the cigarettes aren't a big deal, but he also told me about your..." she looked back at her grandchildren "new friends..." he frowned, probably because he knew this was coming. She checked every pocket and every crease on his clothes, she even checked in the cigarette pack. Ok, well, I'll have to check your bags when we get home" she looked at Jo " It's going to be a long trip."
