Elena
I sat at the kitchen counter as Jack, my sister's husband, cooked. He'd be chopping veggies one second and the next, he'd be at the stove. He was never one to share a kitchen.
I was honestly nervous. It was now 5:15pm, and I knew Abigail and Angel would be here soon. I should have said no when my sister invited them tonight, but I just couldn't bring myself to do that.
"So Lee, tell me about this crush you have." Jack piped up without looking away from his task.
Groaning, I laid my head in my hands. "I do not have a crush. She's my student."
Jack looked at me with both his eyebrows raised, he could never raise just one. "Okay...first thing's first. Is she legal? I'm all for the student-teacher affair but, if she's under age..." He shrugged nonchalantly.
"Jack, you've been married to my sister for too long. You're starting to act just like her." I grumbled, leaning back with folded arms.
He laughed and gestured around my kitchen. "Come on. Seriously, what's going on? I mean, I am making dinner for her."
"Nothing, I'm just curious about her, and it wasn't me that invited her. That's all on your wife. She's eighteen by the way." I felt the need to add her age.
"Bitch, please, you weren't exactly saying no." Liz rolled her eyes as she walked into the kitchen. She looked at Jack, "ask her how she knows her age." She directed a smile at me.
"Shut up. I only looked it up because I was going through my students' list." I mumbled.
They both laughed at me as we heard the doorbell ring. I sat still on the stool and looked at Liz. She rolled her eyes and proceeded to open the door. I turned around, and since I could see the front door from the kitchen, I watched as Liz invited them in.
"Elena!" The little princess squealed as she saw me. She ran to me and I squatted down to scoop her up.
"Don't you look pretty." I watched as her eyes shone with pride at my compliment.
"Uh huh, mommy let me pick out my dress." She was wearing a pink princess dress.
I turned to Abigail to see her smiling at us, mostly at her child. After introducing them to Jack, Angel ran off to play with Kai. Liz offered Abigail a seat at the counter while I retook mine, my sister opting to stay standing.
"How's Lee as a teacher?" Liz asked Abigail.
"Lee?" Abigail asked confused, eyes darting from me to Liz.
"That idiot right there." Liz motioned in my direction.
Abigail let out a small laugh, which made me look at her. We made eye contact and she suddenly seemed very nervous. Green eyes shied away from mine, giving her attention to Liz. It made my chest feel weird, not having her eyes on me. I shook that brief awkward feeling away.
"Um, she's good. A little strict but yeah." The blonde gave a small smile.
Liz hummed. "Don't let the cold demeanor fool you. She's a teddy bear at heart." Liz said as she leaned over, pinching my cheek. I swatted her hand away and sent a glare her way.
