Robby
The day after I celebrated Christmas with my friends, I called my mom. Again.
"Rob," she said, feigning exhaustion. "If I didn't know any better, I'd be worried."
"Come on, Mom," I laughed. "I've called a couple times a week since I left for college."
"Yes, but son, we sent you away to college so we could have time to ourselves. That's kind of difficult when you're calling every other day now."
"First of all, that's rude. Second, if you wanted alone time, you shouldn't have had me. I need help."
She chuckled. "What is it now?"
"Lexi, the girl I called about the other day, mentioned that she doesn't have a dresser for the baby. I was wondering if there's a specific kind of dresser that's best."
There was a long stretch of silence before I heard a sigh. "Honey, is this baby yours?"
I was so shocked by the question all the words left my brain. I didn't respond quickly enough and my mom called for my dad.
"Mom!" I yelled. "I met her after she was already pregnant!"
"Don't yell, Rob! You can't act like it's a crazy question. You just spend a couple hundred dollars on her for Christmas! What is this about?"
I groaned and rand a hand roughly over my face. "Mom," I practically whined. "I don't know how to explain it."
"Can you at least try?" she asked quietly.
My head fell back against the driver's seat in my car. "I like her," I admitted aloud. Talon knew, but only because he was so observant. Heck, maybe all our friends knew, but I was pretty sure Lexi had no idea. And why would she? She was five months pregnant. For all I knew, she wanted to get back with her ex and be a happy little family. The thought left a horrible taste in my mouth. I knew her ex was a jerk, and I hoped that was enough to mean they were officially never going to be together again.
All I wanted was to be the one she wanted.
"So, you love her?" Mom asked.
"That, I'm not sure of. We haven't had many moments alone together."
"So, you might love someone you barely know that's going to be giving birth in a few months to another man's baby?"
"Sounds about right," I said, deflating a bit.
"If you're going to buy a dresser, I would suggest buying one that has a changing table on top. That would have come in so handy when you were a baby."
"Thanks, Mom," I said with a smile.
"You're welcome. And Rob? Please promise me you'll be careful with your heart, okay?"
"I promise," I assured her, although I didn't think I could be careful and put myself out there all at the same time.
I drove to the closest store I thought would sell dresser and picked out a light-pink colored one. It had three drawers and the top was a changing table, like Mom had suggested. It even came with the soft part you were supposed to change the baby on, so obviously that was a good deal!
After putting my backseats down, I was able to load it in my car, then I zoomed back to the apartment building. Sawyer had texted me to let me know Lexi was okay with me hanging out with her instead of going to the party and I wondered how she'd been convinced. It didn't matter, though, because the fact that she'd said yes gave me hope.
