Chapter 5.

It was the thought of the sweet, funny, just plain happy person being missing that messed us up. Her room was neat. Just like Kate. Everything was in it's place. The walls were painted a soft baby blue, with white clouds all around them. Her bed sheets light pink. Everything in the room was a bright, or light color. Nothing dark, nothing black. That's her personality. Soft, sweet, bubbly. It was Kate. It is Kate.

"Come on, Jen, we gotta find the box." I nudged her, and she jerked a little bit, but then went back to Jennie and said "Ok, lets do it."

I scanned the room. Something popped out. It was... nothing. Really. There was nowhere to hide anything! Everything was out in the open. It was all right there, you could see everything. There was only a closet that was closed and out of sight. And a dresser. I immediately walked over to the closet and opened it. More neatness. Tops on hangers, shoes on the ground. I looked on the shelf over the clothes. No box. I looked around on the ground. No box. I closed the closet door and turned around to find Jennie looking through the dresser. She was on the bottom drawer.

     "Nothing. Closet?"

"Nope." We both looked around the room. There was a desk, no drawers in the desk, just wide open shelves. The window sill had a pretty purple blanket on it, pillows on the blanket. There was a tv, the stand underneath was solid. I had an idea.

"The bed." I muttered under my breath.

"What?" Jennie said, looking at me weirdly.

"The bed! It's gotta be in somewhere in the bed!" I started towards the bed, undoing the perfect covers. "Look under it." I told Jennie. She did.

"Nothing. Umm.. what about..." She paused for a minute. I looked at her. She stopped and her face lighted up. "In between the mattresses!" We went on either side of the bed and picked up the mattress. In between the two mattresses was a wood box. It was small. Not bigger than a foot long. I picked it up.

"We gotta take this to the police." Jennie helped me set the mattress back on the bed and i pulled my wallet out of my backpack at the door. Officer Holden's card was in the slot I had put it in last night before going to bed.

I took out my phone and dialed the number on the card. 3-0-2 -8-5-7 -9-2-7-8.  Ringgg.

     "Holden."

"Officer Holden, this is Ally Jacobs. Kate smith? Her case? I'm her--" I was cut off

"Yeah, i know who you are. Do you need something?"

"No. We found something. I think we know why they took Kate. And this must have their fingerprints all over it!"

"Ok, Ally, I want you to get a ride to the police station. Your mother knows where it is. And bring whatever you found. Okay?"

"Ok, we will be there as fast as we can." The phone clicked off. I hung up and looked at Jennie. "Let's go." I grabbed my backpack.

We skipped steps as we raced down the stairs. "Thanks Mrs. Smith, I got it!" I called.

     "Ok, bye hon!"

Thankfully, Kate lives down the street from me, so it takes us about 2 minutes to get to my house and tell my mom what happened and that she needs to take us to the police station. As we drove in the car, my mother slightly speeding, her eyebrows knitted.

"I thought you two were going to Emma's house...? How did you get to Kate's?"

     "We... changed our plans."

"I know you lied to me, Ally. I know that voice. It's okay. I know why. I get it. Just, next time, don't lie, tell me the truth."

"I'm sorry mom, I just thought you wouldn't let us try to find it... and, the police don't know Kate, they couldn't have found it. We had to. And we did."

We pulled up at the police station. All three of us got out, Jennie clenching the box in her hands. In the police station, there were cops all around, just chatting. Fun job, huh? One of them came up to us and said, "can I help you ladies?"

"I need to talk to officer Holden." I said. The officer pointed us to her desk.

"Officer Holden, here." Jennie handed her the box. "We haven't opened it, but Kate found it a week or two ago while walking to school, the same way we walk to the movie theatre, where we got chased. We think whatever's in the box is why they kidnapped Kate! A-and, it has to have fingerprints all over it, right?!"

"Yes, good job girls. Stay right there, I'm going to make sure this box is safe." She jogged over to someone who looked like a high power and said something quickly. He took something from his desk that looked like one of those things they use at airport security lines. They both came back. There was a crowd of cops around the desk forming.

The man came to the box, pressed a button on his device, and started scanning it over the box. There was a light beep..... beep..... beep.....

"Captain John Wales. Nice to meet you." The man said as he went over and around the box every which way. "You two girls found this box in Miss Smith's room?"

"Yeah, we think that's why she was kidnapped." I answered.

"All right, well lets open this thing, shall we?"
