Chapter 6.

The officer carefully opened the box. There were 30 or 40 teeny bags of a white powder. At first, I had no Idea what it was. Wait a second, I thought, I know this from health class. It's heroine. I didn't know what to do or say.

"Kate found this a week or two ago, while we were walking to school." Jennie said to the man. "She just picked it up, we don't know why, and, it never came up to ask her what was in it. Being Kate, i'm doubtful she even opened it. She's just curious, so she picked it up and put it in her backpack."

The officers all started talking, and going back to their desks. The captain started talking to a young woman. "Tina, take this to the lab and run fingerprints on the box and bags. I want the names of these guys."  The woman nodded and walked away.

Officer Wales turned toward me and Kate. "Wow, ladies. It is absolutley amazing that you two were brave enough to bring this to us. This could very well find the horrible people who did this to Jennie. The testing, however, could take a while."

"How long is a while?" Kate said, nervously.

The officer sighed. "Kate, Ally,  Even if we do get fingerprints off the box, which could be hard, these men are most likely very smart and skilled criminals, there is a small chance they will be easy to find. The fingerprints will be in soon, a few hours probably. But finding the people who did this to Jennie will likely take," he paused and sighed again.  "It could take weeks,  or even months."

Next to me, I heard Kate swallow hard. We looked at each  other then I looked at the ground.  After a long silence, she looked at officer Wales. "By then, do you think, they could have-" She stopped and a tear slid down her face. "Could she be..." I knew what she was going to say. She looked like she was just going to fall to the ground. "Could Jennie be... d-dead?" Kate broke down, and started sobbing. My mom put her arm around kate and stroked her hair.

"There is no way to tell, Kate. We will go as fast as we can, and you two will be the first to know when we find something. As of now, you girls should go home, and get some rest. And please- relax.

Kate, My mom, and I walked out the door. We dropped Kate off at her house, and drove silently home. I threw my backpack- screw my stupid homework- on the ground and collapsed on my bed. Right then, I wished it was me, doing god knows what in god knows where right now. I almost scared myself to sleep as i thought of what they could be doing to Kate.
