Sometimes mechanics from other hangars would work with Jimmy's crew temporarily. They would swap stories about other mechanics in other hangars, laughing and having a good time as they worked.
And some of those times proved just how small the world really is.
Jimmy listened as one such mechanic started to tell him a story. "So the boss, right, he was really mad at this one guy, a mechanic. And he's going on about this one thing, just really yelling and such. And this mechanic keeps making smart remarks that are making him angrier."
Jimmy felt like he recognized this story.
"And so finally, the boss holds up his hands and goes, 'How many fingers am I holding up?'"
Yep. Definitely know this story. In fact, it's my story.
"And the mechanic shoots back, 'Nine and a half!'"
Jimmy laughed, more from the fact that this story was still being told in hangars, even years later. He never told the mechanic that he had been the one who said that, that he had been the guy in the story. He let the guy have his moment, his story.
After all, he had already lived it.
