Two weeks had passed since we landed in Japan. We didn't bring much with us so we were already unpacked and starting to settle in. And by that I mean my mom was constantly sending me and my sister out to get things we had forgotten we needed. Its surprising how many little things you forget you need or at least think you need when moving. Washcloths, cleaners different utensils, batteries, etc. Mom said she was sending us out so we could get a lay of our new neighborhood and get accustomed to the new culture we'd be living in.
This was never easy. My linguistic skills were severely lacking at the time. Hell, I could barely speak in my native tongue with any amount of eloquence. I liked to think I was a man of few words but now I simply only knew a few words. I didn't know which was worse when the cashier would me patient and painstakingly help me through a transaction, or when they'd get ornery and impatient with me.
As my sister and I walked down the alley to our new house, we saw an unfamiliar car parked outside our house. We looked at each other and entered, inside was my father sitting at the table with a man I had not met yet. He looked to be roughly my father's age, dressed in a suit with touches of grey in his well kept hair.
We gave a short bow wich he returned and I handed the bags off to my sister as they beckoned me over to join them. I say with my father on his side of the table and introduced myself more properly.
"Nice to meet you young man." He said with a warm expression. "I am Hebijo Goro. I will be working with your father. How are you liking it here so far?" He asked.
What kind of question is that? I miss my friends, I miss my home, I can't communicate with anyone to make new friends, I'll be starting my senior year of high school with people who have known each other for years as an outsider!I would dare say I hate it here so far.
"Its been pretty nice." I say, stuffing my emotions deep down into my gut. There was a flash of something on Hebijo's face, a glint in his eye and a twitch of the corner of his mouth. "I'm glad to hear that." He says.
"Hebijo-san will be working with me as co-director of IT." My dad explained to me. "He was actually just offering to help tutor you in Japanese before you enroll in high school this September." This was no good. I figured I'd just bs my way through, grab a degree and head back home once I'm 18. I had no intention of learning the language in depth and using this summer time to relax and try and enjoy myself. However I knew I was in no place to turn down a generous offer from my father's co-director.
"That's really generous of you sir. I'm looking forward to learning." I say, making sure my tone is even. "When do we start?"
Hebijo-san smiled "I can pick you up tomorrow. I'll show you around town and you can help me pick some stuff up for your lessons. My brother runs a private academy for girls you see, he gave me permission to use some resources for your tutoring. We could even pick you up a girl maybe."
He and my father had a good laugh at that one, my father giving me a hearty clap on the back. I just chuckled awkwardly and looked to the side, "The Blitzkrieg" still fresh in my mind.
The rest of the evening was just more pleasantries and father and Hebijo talking shop. It was funny, I always loved video games, but don't really know much about computers. I went to bed that night and my head was swimming with what has happened, all the changes and all the work I was going to have to do. It was going to be an early start tomorrow, so I didn't stay up on my phone like usual to text my friends overseas. It was an early start tomorrow and I couldn't go embarrassing my father by being tardy on my first day.
