"What took you so long? You get lost?" A voice suddenly spoke next to me.. I nearly jumped out of my skin, heart pounding 10000 miles a minute. It was Hebijo-san, who began to burst out laughing. "Scare easily?" He asked, catching his breath.
"Man I didn't even hear you walk up to me!" I took a second to compose myself. "So what exactly are we here for? I know you said you needed my help getting supplies last night."
Hebijo-san nodded and motioned for me to follow. "Yes we are here for a few textbooks, some notebooks for you to use and some lesson plans to help structure your crash course in an entire language." I followed him as he said this, leading me through the gate that opened as he approached.
This school was much more imposing up close. As we approached the morning light seemed to grow dimmer and when we entered the building proper, the light was as if it were dusk. The oppressive atmosphere almost made it hard to breathe as we walked the dead silent halls. I made to ask about this place but Hebijo-san put up his hand to cut me off. "Please understand it would be best if you don't talk in the halls. I'll explain later."
As we continued down the hall, all I could do was wonder at what kind of school, no, academy is hidden away in the woods like this? And whats with this pressure im feeling around me? Why is it so important that i not talk if it seems like there's nobody here? My mind wandered back to the talk about spirits and I had to repress a shudder. I was trying to remember the correct series of bows and claps in case maybe itd protect me if an angry spirit appeared, when it hit me.
Well I say it but I really mean she. She hit me. We were rounding a corner when a girl speed walking with her head down came flying around and headbutted me right in the chest. She must have been moving pretty quick because it almost nocked the wind out of me. We both reeled back from the impact. She rubbed her forehead for a second then froze and slowly looked up at me.
She had dark purple hair that had to be down all the way to her ankles. Its many locks combed braided and tied in order to keep it from flying about. She had a black school uniform with red trimmings but the shirt was short enough to expose her midriff and the skirts length was in no way regulation. I made sure my eyes didn't linger and looked at her face. Her long bangs cast her deep purple eyes in shadow and she clasped her hands together and pulled up close to her chin and looked up at me fully. She was really quite beautiful. The dim light seemed to blend with her outline causing her pale face the contrast with the dark I went to speak but my words died in my throat and i just stared at her, unable to speak.
She looked at me with a half surprised half worried expression on her face. "Hey are you-" I cut myself off, realizing she wouldn't understand me. I tried to think of any possible phrase I could have picked to to say something, anything and not just continue to stare at this girl. "Um, k-konichiwa?" My words the only noise in the hall. My voice does not echo, and my horrifying attempt at communication just dies in the air like I am on the inside. Dead silence from her. She just stares confused back at me with an apprehensive expression, unsure of what to do.
Hebijo-san finally breaks the silence and appears to reprimand her. Seems short like a warning and she lets out a quiet apology and begins to walk off past us giving me a short bow and hurries away. I just keep staring as she walks off. Hebijo snaps me out of it by quietly saying "Hey I was just joking last night about getting you a girl here." He gave me a knowing grin and gave me a nudge with his elbow. "You'd be wise to avoid the girls from this school, for your own good." I went to ask what he meant but he was already ushering me into an office.
Inside he motioned to as set of 2 boxes full of school supplies. We both grabbed one, hoisting them up. "I teach here occasionally. Computers, mostly." He explained. We make our way out of the school and back to his car. After the boxes were loaded up we hopped in the car."I dont have to walk this time?" I jokingly asked.
"No not this time." He chuckled. "Alright lets go. I'll have you speaking in full sentences by the time you're done today.
