There are many words of wisdom the older generations try to give a young adult just leaving the structured, mandatory world of secondary education. Even more words exist for those who are leaving the extended indenture caused by pursuing university studies. Even more exist for those who cannot pursue education any further, having completed the highest degrees and having nothing left to learn from those who are there to teach. Yet so many of these words fail to truly prepare us for the existence we are to live once we are "on our own" and free of parental support.
We may be told that when one door closes, another opens. We are constantly told that things will only get harder, but we aren't prepared in how to handle those situations. We hear how important it is to follow our passions and our dreams, yet the world is run by money. Dreams don't pay the bills.
Or at least that's what the history books tell us. Things were different so long ago, where these ancient adages were common place. I suppose in some ways, I'm thankful that I live how I do in the world that my ancestors have given me. A world where I don't have to worry about what's going to happen next, as it's prepared for me. I just have to make a choice or two along the way and things are supposed to work out.
Well. They're supposed to. Nothing is really that simple, now is it?
