Two hearts throbbing in sync were heard from the chests of two scared 13 year old boys.  Voices hushed, bodies clamped together, only the towering trees of the jungle could hear and see them--but not for long.

Gavin, the older of the two and bolder, glanced behind and could barely make out the physical forms of the goons who took them.  He looked at Charles, his best bud, and immediately knew what to do.  Charles, his bestfriend Charles has all the courage he needs, he just doesn't see it yet.  And his innocence, Gavin must protect--has sworn to protect.

Charles stared deep into his best friend's eyes.  And he too, knew what Gavin is planning to do.

"No, you cant." Charles pleaded.

Gavin smiled, caressed his pal's face and replied, "I must.  I mean, I did promise that I would protect you, right?"

"I know how to protect myself now! Isn't that the idea of me joining your karate team?!" Charles insisted.

Gavin couldn't help but smile at his friend's naivete.  Won a single competition and he already thinks high of himself.  He thought.

"I know.  You can use what you have learned now."

He glanced at Charles's wounded leg.  It's not that bad but still...

"Gavin please."

"When they chase me, I want you to wait.  Do not follow me or run readily.  Wait, Charles.  Count 200 before you make your way out of this forest.  I'm pretty sure if you walk a straight course, you'll eventually find your path.  D'you understand me?"

With tears trickling down Charles's face, he nodded.

"Good.  I love you, man.  And I'll find you.  I promise."

Gavin leaned towards Charles and kissed his forehead--sealing the promise he had made.  And then, stood up and exposed himself in the open.  The goons are still far away from them.

"Hey! Monkeys! Over here, you stupid monkeys!" Gavin yelled.

The goons saw him and foolishly followed Gavin's track.  Meanwhile, a heart that was left in the safety of the wide mango tree was beating rapidly.  Afraid for his best friend's life.  But hopeful in the promise that was made.
