Love is easy. It's a fairytale that will go as we planned, smooth sailing the entire ride! Wrong, love is not how Disney or Hallmark make it out. Most people aren't even sure what love is anymore. We have an unrealistic idea of what true love is. Movies and books have corrupted the true meaning of love. Sadly, most don't know the true meaning of love.
How is it that we have an unrealistic idea of love? From a young age, we have been taught that love is a game. We wish that a prince or princess would come rescue us or we will rescue them. We have this fantasy that love is a walk through the park. That we will never be hurt or disappointed. The truth is, life's hard, and so is finding true love. Many people, places and things depict that love is found through looks and beauty. Hallmark and Disney are two very big contributors to why love has become corrupted.
No one wants to say Hallmark movies are bad, (though their acting skills are the worst), and we most certainly don't want to say that Disney is corrupt. But, compared to what the bible says Disney and Hallmark give Love a corrupt and unrealistic name. We have shows, movies, and books screaming at us what love is. It says it's in the looks of someone's looks, what someone's skills are, or even the shape and size of your body. Many girls believe they will never find true love because they don't have Cinderella's looks, Rupunsle hair, Ariel's voice, and Bell's kindness. They have been instilled that a man with perfect looks, talents, and hair will come and they will live happily ever after. Know you might think, I don't! But do you dream of a perfect 20,00 dollar wedding, do you dream of a man with the perfect hair, eyes, the perfect voice? Or women with flawless curves, hair, and the perfect smile? Do you want someone who will treat you with respect 24/7, someone who gets you perfectly, never fails to meet you every need? This is not what we should look at! It's unrealistic, no one is perfect, therefore you will never find the perfect someone. So what is true love?
What is true love? Well disney says its; " Putting someone else's dreams before your own. It's a feeling that you can't spell out." But is it really? The best answer I have ever heard is from a book called "What if Jesus Meant What He Said." The author, Nate Bramsen says this: " First John 4:8 tells us, "God is love!" It does not say he is merely love; he is love. HIs love is undefingly deep, unconditional, sacrificial love that seeks the welfare of others, no matter how undeserving they may be. God's love is not based on feelings, but on choice (John 3:16) God's love is not to be confused with the self-seeking, sensual passion we see around us. In our world, when fleshly passion is forced upon another against his or her will, we call it abuse, not love. Such "love" takes. God's love gives." The love is this world is temporary, and shallow compared to Gods. This world will never meet up to what true love is. 1 Corinthians tells us, "Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, alwaystrusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails. (But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away.)"
Love is not easy in the long run. It is not going to be a fairytale of perfection. We have to work hard, you have to fight for it! But you can find love, just not how the movies or books tell us. We have to get this unrealistic idea of love out of our heads. We have to accept that love is not what Disney and Hallmark tell us. True love is patient, kind, gentle. Stop looking for what the world calls love, and find the love God has waiting for you!
