Unedited.
I stare at my mum and aunts smiling proudly at all the things they just got back with, they just got back from the market.
"What do you think?" Mama asks me excitedly.
"It's nice" I say.
None of these things excite me, I don't even care what I'm going to wear. She frowns "I forget I didn't give birth to a girl. She's like a boy".
"Mama" I pout hugging her as she pushed me away.
"Don't bother joining us at the showroom tomorrow" she says.
"Okay then, if you don't want me to"
Initially I hated the idea of going to choose furniture with my mum but this just makes everything perfect.I enter my room, close the door and sit on the couch by the window.
I called Nura."So? Are you free tomorrow?" He asks curiously.
I nod "Yes. I escaped shopping with my mother""But don't girls usually love doing things like this? You're getting married to a man you love"
"I don't love Rahim. We're just best friends and I care about him and that's it"
"If that's what you tell yourself. So are we meeting?""Of course, have I ever cancelled?"
"Not that I remember""Good, then don't lose the faith you have in me now"
He laughs "I can't, not even if I try"
"Great"::
Rahim's POV.
Hafsah came to see me in my office, I don't know why but I have an idea who'd give her my address.
"So? You chose Rayhanah over me?"
I say nothing.
"You won't even answer me? You can date my sister, my friend, marry your best friend but you can't marry me, not even dating me?"I stay quiet.
"What's so special about them? That you had to date them but not me?"I don't say a word.
"Rahim?!"I raise my head "Please stop shouting, this is an office, not a market place".
"Why? How could you date my younger sister and plan to marry your best friend but can't even date me?"
"Because I don't want to. I can't marry you after dating your sister, what would my aunt think of me? It had to be one of you and I chose her".
She huffs frustratedly "Really? What about Rayhanah? Are you lying to yourself saying she'd be the perfect wife?" she continues when I don't answer "Because everyone knows she's not. She can't cook, clean, sweep, in fact the only thing that makes her female is her body but she's practically a man".
"And I'm okay with that".
She scoffs "Don't lie to me, you're not okay with it. You're blinded by your emotions. You don't want to hurt her and you also can't let her be because she's the only one you have left, Khaliq isn't with us anymore, it's not love, it's pity".
"Then she must pity me too".
"I don't know and I don't care about what she thinks"."Hafsah, leave".
She hisses and walks out.::
I have been calling Rayhanah all day but she hasn't picked my calls. Its unlike her to ignore me so I can't help but get worried.
I keep pacing around my office, thinking of other reasons she might have ignored my calls because hopefully she ignored them and not something else.
This was the same thing that happened when Khaliq passed so I'm trying to remain optimistic but it's getting more difficult by the second.
Someone knocks on the door.
"Yes? Come in" I say back."What's with all the calls?"
I turn around and see Rayhanah standing by the door."Nothing. Why didn't you just call back?"
She sits and crosses her leg "Well because my phone was on silent, it was when I was on my way up here that Ya Khalil told me you couldn't reach me".
I scoff "How many hours did it take you to leave him this time? After batting your eyelashes"
"Not long, he has a meeting" she says disappointedly.
"Why are you here anyway?"
"Oh right. I came to check up on you, my groom" she says laughing sarcastically. It was really weird hearing Rayhanah say something like that, it makes me wonder if she really expects me to divorce her.
"You have so now you can leave"
She stares at me. "Is that all I get?"
"It's all you'll ever get"."Whareva" she picks up her bag "I'm famished so I need to go eat. Bye" she walks out closing the door.
::
Sheriff brings me some water.
"In a cup? Not a bottle?" I ask."You know the way to the kitchen, if you're that thirsty get it yourself" he says back lying down on the couch next to mine.
"I'm too lazy" I gulp down the glass of water.
"I can't believe you and Rayhanah are actually getting married, why her?" he asks confused "She's pretty, okay I'll admit she has a bomb body but she always covers them with oversized man clothes or those ready made gowns so I don't see a clear reason why".
I smile "You'll never understand nor will you see it".
"Don't tell me she'll be a good mother because I know Hafsah would too"."Like I said, you'll never understand".
"Try me"."There's no point" I huff and lie down too.
"Is it because you're her first kiss?"I scoff "I wish. But I'm not".
"I thought you said you were"."I thought so too but it turns out it was Nura, Khaliq's second cousin".
"What?! How did the two get to know each other?"
"As long as they both know Khaliq, meeting is not a problem at all"
He huffs "It's just so shocking that it turns out Rayhanah is meant to be your wife".I nod "Who would have thought?"
"But if Khaliq was alive, do you think you would have agreed to marry her? In fact would marrying her even be an option for you?"Honestly I'm not sure we'd be here. I would probably be working because I know one of the things that made my parents decide to force me to get married is because of Khaliq's death so I doubt I'd even agree to her offer but can I tell anyone that? Would she even have made the offer?
"Yes, I'd still marry her".
