He wasn't expecting anyone and he knew that it would probably be Gretchen, his secretary, behind that door. By that time of the night, everyone in Ruel's office was home, having dinner with their families or something.
Ruel didn't usually leave work early. His job was his empire, he had to take care of it and work hard on it. But, deep down, Ruel didn't want to get home early and spend hours there, alone. He would never admit it to anyone but, he felt lonely.
"Sir, your fr-" Gretchen had to stop mid sentence because of a pair barging into the office, smiling and jumping around.
"Thanks, Gretchen, but we can introduce ourselves." Mike gave Gretchen a grin and a wink while shutting the door in her face. "Dude, it's Saturday night and, what are you doing? Paperwork?" Mike's not the type to stay home. "C'mon, dude, let's go out, get some drinks."
"Yeah, you've been working really hard lately, you need a break. And I need a break as well." Brian, who hadn't said a word since they arrived, was standing next to Ruel's window, where you can see the whole city's view.
Ruel was concerned about Brian. He was not the most affectionate friend but he for sure knew when his friends were going through a rough moment. "What happened to you?" Ruel asked, turning around to face Brian.
"She broke up with me, she's in love with a coworker" Ruel and Mike kept quiet, not really sure of what they should answer to that.
Ruel usually puts his job first, but after Brian's news, he felt like he had to do something for him. A couple drinks wouldn't hurt anyone. "Ok, alright, wait for me outside, I have to organize this mess and then, we can go." Mike threw his fists up in victory and grabbed Brian by his shoulders, pushing him outside the office.
The three friends drove around the city to their usual bar, Neon Lights. They walked into their usual spot. Most of the waitresses and bartenders knew them, they've been going there since it opened. Every time one of the boys is feeling down, stressed, in need of a break; they gather there. Mike tends to find a girl he can hook up with, while Ruel and Brian chat or drink. It used to be like Mike wanted, the three musketeers reunited in the same mission; but then Brian got a girlfriend and Ruel, he just changed, after Toni he changed.
The first forty minutes, Ruel and Mike sat listening to Brian rant about his ex girlfriend, who had truly broken his heart. After that, Mike convinced Brian to try and get another girl tonight, clear his mind. Instead of going with them, as he had pictured for a moment, Ruel stayed where he was sitting, alone. But his eyes followed his pair of friends and he laughed every time they got rejected by some girls. They were a pair of dumbasses, but he didn't know what he would do without them.
Ruel's hysterical laugh stopped the moment his eyes landed on the new group of girls his friends were talking to. He blinked a few times, just to make sure his brain wasn't hallucinating, just to be sure his brain wasn't playing tricks with him, just to confirm the girl he was looking at was Iris and not some girl that looks like her.
Ruel froze. Was that Iris? Why was Iris there? What could she possibly be doing in that bar? Ruel, she's obviously having some drinks. She looked so beautiful, though. She wasn't wearing extremely fancy or provocative clothes. Her dress was the perfect mixture between fancy, provocative and cute. Her dress fitted like a glove. Ruel could not believe his eyes as he scanned Iris from head to toe. Finding her there only proved his hypothesis was true: Iris was beautiful inside out, from every point of view you could get, there was not a single thing that could change the fact that Iris was an angel.
