~ Welcome to Wonderland. We’ve got it all, hmm hmm and hmm hmm that makes hmm grow tall ~

I hummed softly under my breath as I trotted along the sidewalk that stretched the length of Main Street. Today was one of those bright sunny days that just screamed of little bluebirds flitting about, fawns and bunnies frolicking in the grassy fields, and songs bursting forth from rosy red lips. As my dwarf-ish self, I didn’t have the range I used to, but I certainly made up for that in enthusiasm. I laughed when the birds – Gloria and Myrtle – startled off their branches as I actually began to sing.

“You silly birds,” I scolded them gently, “why, one would think you’ve never heard a human voice before.” I clucked my tongue at them, grinning as they five-bombed my head in retaliation. For tiny little birdies, they could sure hold a grudge. “Now, now, little ones. You know I have lots to do today. Stop dilly-dallying.”

I slid to a stop outside Buttercup’s Bake Shop and sighed. The wonderful scents of baked goods floated out and surrounded me, holding me hostage in their warm, glorious aroma. Could I make my own cupcakes and cookies and such? Yes. Yes, I could. But there was nothing quite like browsing through all the goods on display, taste buds bursting and mouth-watering as I select a few treats to bring back home. No, I don’t have a problem; thank you very much. Ok. In and out. No time to dawdle or delay. I have far too many things on my plate for today,
I huffed out a breath and briskly rubbed my hands together. I could do this. If I keep telling myself that, maybe it’ll come true one day.

One day my prince will come, I sang as I nudged the door open. And nearly died an orgasmic death. Chocolate. My kryptonite. I’m unable to resist the temptation to touch, to taste, the delicious flavor of melt in your mouth pleasure. Better than any man could ever give. This is why I make the trek into Silver Springs every Tuesday. Why I brave the masses of insanity and craziness, well, this and ice cream, but really, I live out in the middle of nowhere. You can’t blame a girl for loving her sweets.

I followed my nose over to the large glass display set upright in the middle of the room with chocolate galore. There’s brownies and cookies and cupcakes and bars and things I don’t even know what the name is. And I start to feel like Gollum must, the urge to snatch up all the goods and call them precious rising. But I refrain – barely – because I am an adult human being and will act the part. “Good Morning, Buttercup!” I called cheerfully to the owner and goddess of baking standing behind the counter. “Would you please add a few of those marvelous brownies and cookies to my order? I’m afraid I can’t resist them.”

Good stuff received, I forced myself out of the bakery and back into the wild throes of people. This right here is why I avoid towns as much as possible. Loud noises, tons of people, weird smells… Ugh. The forest is much better. But there are some things I can’t easily get out there, so into town I must go.

I whistled for Laerel, and she bounded up to me, wriggling around in excitement. She seems to love meeting new humans everywhere she goes, even though I always remind her that they can often be cruel to us deer. “Hold still, La. I can’t load your harness with you jumping all over the place.” I grumbled a bit more under my breath till she finally quieted. “Thank you!”
When the witch cursed me all those years ago, I had to find new ways to do things since I’d lost half my height. Fortunately, La was willing to become my pack mule of sorts, so I wouldn’t have to race back and forth all the time. So, we figured out how to rig up a harness to carry all the supplies to the cabin.

I held out a handful of her favorite grain for her to nibble before looking around for the bird twins. “Where do you think they flew off to this time?” I asked aloud, though I got no answer since somebody was far too busy pigging out to even pay any attention to me. I sighed - something I do about 10 million times a day with all my friends - and figured they would catch up. I still have more stops to make before making the trek back home, which I needed to do before nightfall, which is when all the bad things come out to hunt.
