You weren't well known in Gravity Falls, only a handful of people have seen you and acknowledge your presence, and you liked it that way. You enjoyed the piece and quiet that you had, but it all changed when the pines twins arrived for the summer.
The town already had paranormal activity but when one of them, a boy named Dipper Pines started to try and investigate, things took a turn for the worse.

Probably the doing of the Pines family. You were in the forest when it started. A large multi color X-shaped rip appeared in the sky, then the chaos started.
You gawked at it, at the age of 18 and not coming from the best home you had seen a lot, but this was just insane. You had also studied gravity falls, you had found out about a prophecy that involved a dream demon who would seek to remake this universe in his image. Now, you had to put this knowledge to use.
