INTRO
"She's alright." A woman in a white lab coat glanced at me as she wrote something down on her clipboard.
"Is she functioning like the others?" Another voice resonated behind me, but my head hurt way too much for me to look that way.
The woman with the clip board stopped writing abruptly. "She'll be fine in a few days. She should be back to normal like the other kids."
A sigh of relief came from the female voice behind me. "Thank god. I can't stand wearing these protective helmets anymore around them."
"It's for our own safety. They did just get out of experimentation a few weeks ago. They probably don't know how to control their abilities yet."
Snickers came from the other woman. "So, what did Vi do to #3 over here?"
"The usual. She apparently accidently gave her too much pills. The woman never understands the fact that they only need one a day.God only knows why she even works at an institute like this."
"An overdose, huh? So her micro chip must've overpowered and shut down."
"Yep. Poor thing nearly passed out just from walking. Then again, Ben could've thought of a smarter way to fuel their chips."
"Or maybe just a smarter way on implanting abilities to people. I mean, we're still using chips and it's the twentieth century already. We should be smarter than this."
"Excuse me?" I interrupted the conversation before it could go any further. From the way they were talking, I was afraid they would never leave my room. "You're hurting my head even more." I pointed to the helmets they were both holding in their hands, silently signaling them to put it back on.
Clipboard lady sighed and grudgingly put the sleek, white helmet on. It beeped briefly, signaling it was working.
"My apologies #3. I assumed you were asleep."
I waved it off. "It's fine. I'd just like some privacy." I watched as both women hurriedly scurried out of my room. With a sigh, I collapsed back onto my bed, shutting my eyes closed.
Finally.
It irked me whenever the lab assistants forgot to wear their helmets around me. Sure it was an inconvenience for them, but it was all for their safety and for the test subjects' peace of minds. With the helmet on, we weren't able to read, or how they preferred to say it, "scan" their minds.
It hurt, scanning others. Wave after wave of pointless information accompanied by pain was not a fun thing to experience. Anything I saw, I scanned. From books, to posters, to even bed sheets, I scanned. I was basically a human scanner to put in simpler terms. I didn't even have a choice to what I wanted to scan. If my eyes happened to land on a pencil, endless amounts of information will come to contact with me. I would know useless facts about it like the type of wood it was made from, or how many times it's been sharpened, or even how many people had used it. Anything about that pencil, I instantly knew just from a simple scan.
It was stupid, really, because I'm pretty sure the pencil would've had a longer biography than I could ever dream of.
