Main Street

Once we stopped at the Main Street at Edwards Island, Ren was the first one to run out onto the dock, following with me, Alex and Jonas.

"Smell that clean air, boys and girls!" He said, pausing for a bit, looking at me, Alex and Jonas. "Boy and girls. This ain't city livin'."

Jonas made an audible sigh, "Yeah, um, anyone need a smoke? I have a full pack." He asked, slightly waving the packet.

Ren stammered for a bit, "Uh--oh, uh, no thanks. I mean, I literally just said the clean air thing, so..."

I agreed obviously but also I need to not wreck my lungs, "Yeah, I don't smoke at all." I said while looking around. Alex turned down the offer politely too.

"Alright, my other friends should be up and around the bend..." Ren lead on with his sentence, pointing to the set of steps behind him.

Jonas' lips were pressed in a thin line before he said, "Actually, that--I mean, I don't to be the guy to break us up already, but Ren, can you do me a favor? Can I have like two real quick minutes with Alex for a second?"

"And, you can, you know. You can run up and meet your friends." He added on.

Ren darted his eyes around, "Uh, really? Just... that's kinda..."

Alex butted in, concerned, "Wait, is--is something wrong? What is it?"

"Nothing's wrong, nothing's wrong. It'll just take two minutes, super fast." Jonas assured.

"Alright, but... haha.. Uh, look. I don't wanna go up by myself." Ren mumbled nervously.

"No, it's... It's fine, Ren. Go on up ahead and we'll catch up with you." Alex said.

"I'll go with you Ren!" I said quickly, giving him a genuine smile. "It does seem kinda scary for you to go by yourself."

"Oh, thanks ____. Should we head up?" He asked, holding his hand out, what a gentleman.

We walked up the steps and through Main street, admiring the small shops. We didn't even realise that we were holding hands... Might as well cherish this moment, his hand is so warm too.

Ren must've saw the others catching up after a few minutes, he stammered a quick sorry and let go of my hand.

"Hello, kids. Look, the other guys and gals must be further up, so... be quick now." He said, looking at me, his face slightly blushed from embarrassment.

He started to rant about the island in general, "Okay, speed-read definition of Edwards Island: this is a tourist trap with shops and a beach. Nobody lives here, except for some geriactric named Mrs. Adler. But, as God as my witness, we'll never mention her or any other old person's name again."

"We are here to drink and be stupid, a tradition apparently started by bored retruits in the 1950s, who would sneak dates over from the costal towns." He added on, continuing rambling, I didn't even pay attention to what he's saying, he seems so carefree.

"They literally called it "trawling"." Ren exclaimed.

Jonas hummed as Alex said, "Wait... how'd they pull that? Isn't, like, security an important thing in military bases?"

Ren turned from where he was walking and thought about it for a bit, "Yes, but apparently the desire to have cheap sex with floozies will overcome all borders. It's the American way."

I cocked a brow, huh interesting...

"So, to summarize: we are not allowed here after dark, the town is shut down, and we - the Camena High Junior Class - have come to commit improper acts." Ren said, full of pride.

"And the other thing... is the weirdo caves." He said, stretching how he said some of the words so it would sound somewhat scary.

""Weirdo caves"?" Jonas repeated.

"The whole reason Alex brought her radio is because when you go to the... it's like... the "front"--" Ren replied, finding it hard to pick up on a certain word.

My eyebrows rose, "Oh! The mouth?"

"The mouth of this particular cave, you can sometimes pick up frequencies to stations that don't exist. You'll hear voices... or just... sounds." Ren said, mentally thanking me.

Alex nodded, "It's uh... it's pretty creepy... at least I've heard." She told Jonas.

Jonas was clearly confused, "So back up a second. Who's Mrs. Adler?"

"Her family, I think, like, owns or owned some of the island or something? She's been shacked in the same spot for like seventy years. She's kind of what you'd call a local legend." Ren answered, adding on, "She has a house on the other side of the woods."

"The beaten path officially ends here. The beach is past the fence. I think Jerry told me that there's a way they used to get over there, but... I'm blanking on what it was." Ren continued, pointing at the ragged fence beside him. "But it's not--I mean, it can't be too difficult."

Alex walked towards a dumpster, Jonas following behind. "I think the dumpster will get us over if it'll... budge."

"Well, let's try it." Jonas replied, the two of them pushing the dumpster towards the fence, kind of like some leverage to get over the fence.

We all jumped over the fence, I needed a bit of help but Ren was there to help me over, he is so darn sweet.
