CHAPTER THREE.
Ifeoluwa dragged her legs along. A week had been exhausted in between her rigorous school activities. It was Saturday again, and she was coming back from choir rehearsals, no feelings of paranoia today, meaning no Lekan to sneak up on her. But she was trying to create a distance between her and the groups of girls walking in front of her. They were also part of her fellowship’s choir, and all of them including her were making their way home from the rehearsals. She decided to distant herself because she doesn’t want to get caught up in the latest gossips. Things never get past this particular group of girls in the fellowship, they always seems to know when another juicy details has landed.
But the mention of Bro. josh name in passing made her get more attentive. One of them, who was the tallest was the one speaking now, she was in 300level and was well known for her outspokenness. When Ifeoluwa could deduce what she was saying, it made her heart sank, and probably thought she heard wrong.
“So, sis. Lola found out he was also dating Sis. Onome. Why do you think both of them were absent at rehearsals today. It caused a fight between them and the fellowship’s president had to get involved.”
“Really!” one of the crowd of girls exclaimed “When the sister’s coordinator keeps reminding the sisters to be convinced about their proposals, they all thought it was a joke. Now, are thing not happening?” she continued
“Yes o my dear” one of the girls picked up the thread of conversation. “Besides, I wonder if he got confused, and didn’t hear what God was saying plainly, or he wanted to play two innocent Christian sisters” she laughs, clapping her hands mockingly.
Angry tears blurred Ifeoluwa’s vision, she couldn’t take it anymore. She bypassed the gossiping girls, who she barely murmured greeting at, before rushing home. She met her housemates in the living room where they were all cackling at the T.V watching a reality show, it was the door she slammed that got their attention. They all watched her go as she made it to her room slamming the door again.
No doubt, they’d all be wandering what had gotten into her, she was not the one to act razz, she was always the easy going one in the house, and she doesn’t get into fight with anyone, neither does she gets involved in one.
Ifeoluwa couldn’t place the reasons she was angry, but what hurt her most, was her intelligence that was played on. Those girls didn’t know it was not only two Christian sister that was played, but she was included too. Probably, there were several more oblivious sisters in the fellowship and beyond. Then, she had little wonder about his infrequent calls, and their shortness whenever he did.
An idea struck her, she wanted to talk to someone. That left her with the last option. “her mum” she brought out her phone from her bag.
Her mum picked up on the first ring. ‘Hello Ifemi” her mum called on the other end.
On hearing her mum’s voice, she busted into fresh tears.
Are you okay honey; I will call for your dad right now, if you want.
“Don’t mum, I’m fine I just wanted to hear from you”
“My daughter, I know you are not as fine as you claim. Your voice sounds like your emotion battery is down. You don’t have to talk about it, if you don’t want to. But don’t forget to tell it to God who understands you better than anyone.”
“Yes mum, I know, Thank you”
“I will call you again before the week runs out.
“It’s alright dear, eat healthy and sleep well”.
Her brief conversation with her Mum calmed her a bit, then she closed her eyes, heeding to her mum’s advice.
“Dear lord, just has Jeremiah had said, you knew me before I was formed in my mother’s womb, you knew I will be a student of this school. You knew I would be a member of my campus fellowship, you knew I would get involved in whatever this thing is, and you knew I will be here kneeling today pouring out my heart. But I know you will bestow unto me strength to get over this, and your peace will soothe me”
She dozed off right where she was kneeling, feeling lighter.
