Rebbeca's POV
Bright lights filled my sight with a crash, shaking me from my sleep and making me fall out of bed. My battered books that once belonged to my father lay scattered across my bedroom floor, holding tales of gods and decades old fables. My favorite paperback book had fallen from my bedside table when I fell from my bed and now resembled a collapsed house of cards. I let out a small yelp at the sight, for I have no money to replace it or even fix it. Not to mention the fact that the ruined book held memories of my father reading aloud to me me when i was young and he was alive. I became an orphan when i was seven years old and now live with my grandparents who won't even look me in the eye on account of being a spitting image of their daughter, Mary-Anne. The thought of my parents still brings tears to my eyes, even though it happened over ten years ago.
My grandparents aren't much help though. They can barely afford to feed me, let alone school me and over the years i have slowly wasted away to the pale, skinny child i am. None of them are good conversationists either, always letting out a small sob every time they lay eyes on me. Frankly, I think I've gone a bit peculiar over the years with no one to talk to except my reflection and nothing to do except milk cows. Personally, I think they only let me live here because I'm the only one still capable of taking care of the farm.
Suddenly another flash of green filters through my bedroom window, filling my white washed walls with an eery green light. A sight like this would usually scare the cupcakes out of any normal, sane person. But when you see the death of a loved one, and lose everything you care about, fear seems pointless. Well, most of the time, anyway.
Carefully lifting my body off the floor, I gently place my broken book on my old, hay sented bed and slowly eased my door open to the stair case, which I promptly creep down in order to not disturb my grandparents slumber. Taking my time to walk down the stair case, I let my crazy imagination take over my mind, speaking whispers of possible reasons why the cow paddock is glowing green. Naturally my first thoughts were aliens. But then I thought of real life possibilities like the hulk crashing into the farm or maybe some new bad guy that glows green wants to kidnap some innocent civilian to get some super heroes after him. Maybe even one of those mutants that they show on tv.
But when I opened the door to the outside, I was swarmed with a sight I never would have expected. A huge crater lay embedded in the fertile earth, about the size of our house on its side. The ground seemed to glow a slightly green color around the crater, explaining the bright green light I saw in my bedroom. Slowely I creeped forward towards the crater, taking in small details like the sound of angered voices and thunder in the distance, creating an obvious horror movie scene were everyone in the cinema screams "don't go near the crator!". I smile slightly at that thought of someone caring if I died when a loud crash of thunder fills the night, making me let out a loud scream of fright. Clutching my chest, I tried to force down the memories of my parents bodies laying on the burning carpet, surrounded by flames caused by a lightning strike. I shake my head softly at my own cowardice, only to stop short at the sound of a pained groan. Quickly, I collected my thoughts, shoving painful memories into the back of my mind, and raced towards the cry of dismay. A low rumble of thunder sounded as I approached the groaner, which surprisingly came from a mass of glowing rubble at the centre of the crater. I squinted into the light, not really seeing anything that could even begin to make a groaning sound. A Flash of lightning lights up the farm, showing a dark haired man covered in blood and green clothing. I gasped aloud at the sight, making the man snap his eyes open. He had the most beautiful eyes i had ever seen. A crack of thunder sounded above my head, making me scream in terror. The man looked shocked as held my head in my hands, screaming at the sky to stop as I tried stupidly to be brave. I looked over to the man saying in a tremmbling voice "w-wait h-here...i'll g-go get some bandages" but the memories of my parents death came flooding back to me as I collapsed to the ground, holding my knees to my chest. I screamed in my mind to get up and help the in indured stranger but instead came another scream of fright as another explosion of thunder filled my ears. I sucked in a breath as a flash of lightning caught my sight, making me sob louder than the thunder that promptly followed.
"GO AWAY!" I screamed helplessly to the sky, throwing a nearby rock into the paddock in a pathetic act of fierceness. Cries of pain escaped my lips as more thunder and lightning filled the sky. I have never felt more terrified in my life as the black began to take over my mind. But I couldn't leave the stranger out here. That would be murder and cowardice on my part. Gathering all my courage, I lifted up my shaking body and walked slowly over to bleeding man. He seemed to be in a lot of pain, but neither the less surrendered. He must think I left him out here. I force down my guilt as I climb carefully into the meter deep crater, careful not to disturb him. The act was in vain though, for his eyes snapped open immediately. He seemed to say something, but all that came was a loud crake of thunder and a groan from his pale lips. The storm was getting closer, and it wouldn't be long before I lay collapsed again on the ground with hot springs of tears from eyes and dreams haunted from the night I became an orphan. Swallowing hard, I leant down and picked up the man with obvious struggle. This man must be twice my size in muscle and height, yet I tried my best not to drop him. The stranger seemed oddly insulted to be carried by a girl half his size, but seemed to wreak to argue. Thick drops of rain began to pour out of the clouds, making me smile at the break of the drought, but making the stranger wince at the cold water on his wounds. I attempted to hurry my pace, but the sound of the impending storm made me scream a sound vaguely familiar to that of a slaughtered animal. Before my fear could get the better of me we arrived at the front door to my house.
And that's when my life changed forever.
