One of the hardest parts of life

is deciding

 whether to walk away

or try harder.

We walked in silence, the impending dread of dinner loomed in the form of an intricately carved door.

It was appropriately sized, an immense and wide-stretching giant.

Tiny etched patterns sprawled over the wide expanse of the door. Golden veins snake through the smaller pictures. All the smaller pictures made a big picture, as the gold lines made a majestic sun.

There was a crushing presence on the other side, almost as big as the drawn sun gleaming gold on the giant door. It felt like a boulder, a growing one, slowly pressing my presence against a hard place. I gulped, anticipating the confirmation at dinner.

Sister gazed at me, her piercing blue eyes poked holes in my body.

Brother stared at me, with a heavy expectant gaze.

Open it, her eyes flashed a faded blue.

I don't want to, I looked back.

Mother will be less mad, Brother stared, making a legitimate point.

Fine, I glared.

I slumped over to the door with an air of resigning defeat. I gingerly placed both palms on each side of the door. An etched image of a crow glared at me, it's beady onyx eyes belittled me. The inky soulless gaze scream, you are not worthy.

I ignored the crow as a burning sensation built up. The aged wood burned against my palm. It seared hot in a mildly unpleasant but unpainful way. A trickle of sweat took its time to agonizingly crawl its way down my face.

I resisted the urge to wipe it as I let my eyes fall and drew a steady deep breath in. Then I reached into the depths of my memories.

Alright, just a little bit. Don't lose control.

I fell into the crevice of my mind. Drifting softly in blinding darkness. Glowing colorful pairs of orbs floated around in the unending night.

I looked through them. Blue, violet, brown.

A pair of light blue globes shot by and disappeared into the dark obsidian.

Perfect.

I walked over to the orbs with no solid objects underneath, it was my mind, after all, and I can control some of it.

I ran after it, dodging and leaping over other orbs. The light blue spherule continued to evade my relentless chasing with ease. My palms grew slightly sweaty and burned, a reminder the outside world was waiting.
