I smiled broadly as I saw my childhood friend approach. I called out to him from the garden balcony. He looked up and gave me that special smile which was always reserved for me and only me. He excused himself from his brother and jogged over to where I was, picking me up and twirling me around as I laughed whole-heartedly.
“Oh how I missed you Karla,” he whispered as he tightened his grip around me. I pulled back with a whimsical smile.
“Me too Killian,” I replied.
I was 18 and Killian was 20. We had met when I was 5 and had been fast friends ever since then. We would play together all the time and play tricks on each other. All in all, it was the perfect friendship. I’d been there for him when his father disappeared without trace and he’d been there for me when I’d lost my mother to an unknown disease when I was 12. It came to no surprise then, that I found myself falling for him as soon as I hit 14. At first I tried to push the feelings away. It wasn’t appropriate for a baron’s daughter to fall in love with the son of a fugitive. However, I couldn’t help my feelings for Killian becoming stronger. I never told Killian of my feelings though but I had a feeling he knew.
It wasn’t until he had turned 19 that he confessed he had feelings for me too, just minutes before he had to leave for a mission with his brother. I was gutted that we didn’t have enough time to speak properly about what it meant and what we were going to do about it.
We’d written to each other countless times and my father was none the wiser. And, now he was back, a year and a half later. We hadn’t even shared our first kiss yet. I was determined we would though and that I would tell my father that I wanted to be with Killian.
“Ah, Master Jones, how wonderful it is to see you again. I trust your mission went well,” said my father with a smile. We immediately separated but I still held on to his hand. It wasn’t uncommon for my father to see me so openly affectionate with Killian anyway.
“Baron Du Loire. Yes, the mission was very successful, thank you. I was just about to ask your daughter if she and her father would be available to attend a dinner party tonight at the King’s Palace as my honorary guests,” he said with a genuine smile. My eyes widened in surprise.
“Well, we would be very honoured, Master Jones,” said my father as he shook his hand.
“I will send over a carriage at 6 o’clock, then.”
My father nodded happily and then left us to go back to his work.
I quickly turned to him, “What is this all about?”
He smiled mysteriously and said, “You’ll see tonight, my dear.” I huffed. Now I was extremely curious.
Six o’clock couldn’t come soon enough! I had been ready about an hour earlier.
“Is everything all right Karla dear?” asked my father as he saw me peeking through the window for the umpteenth time.
“Yes father, I’m just curious about tonight, that is all.” My father gave me an amused smile which startled me somewhat. Did he know after all?
“Master Jones has turned into a very fine gentleman, don’t you think?” he said. I stiffened slightly.
“I still remember the scruff of a little boy he was when you first started playing together but he has grown into a very honourable man despite his misfortunes. It wouldn’t surprise me if you liked him as more than a friend darling.”
I stared at him for a few seconds before saying, “You know?” He chuckled before embracing me in his arms.
“Karla, I knew ever since you were 14. Your behaviour towards him started to change. I’m not a clueless old coot you know,” he laughed. I was very shocked to say the least but I started laughing along with him.
“Oh daddy, we love each other. Does this mean you would give us your blessing?” I asked with hopeful eyes.
“You don’t even have to ask my dear.” I hugged him tight and just at that moment the doorbell rang.
“The carriage is here. Shall we go?” asked my father as he extended his arm out. I smiled broadly and took his arm before we made our way to the carriage.
We soon arrived at the palace and made our way to the grand hall. As my father and I were descending the stairs I caught sight of Killian. My breath was taken away. He looked so handsome in his uniform.

Killian was having a drink with his brother and their crew when his brother Liam nudged him and nodded over to the staircase. He turned around and stopped. His heart skipped a beat as he watched his beloved descend the stairs with her father. She looked breathtaking in her powder blue gown. He looked at her face and saw the look of pure love she was giving him. He just couldn’t take his eyes off her. He smiled and made his way to the end of the staircase to greet her and her father.
“Baron Du Loire, My Lady,” he said with a smile as he shook hands with the baron and then kissed Karla’s hand, never taking his eyes off her.
“Master Jones,” she replied with twinkle in her eye.
“Take good care of my daughter, Master Jones,” said the Baron, startling him a bit. He looked at the Baron who gave him a wink before he left them to greet other people he knew.
“What was that all about?” he asked Karla.
“He knows. He’s always known.” Killian looked at her in shock but she continued with barely held back enthusiasm.
“Killian, he gave us his blessing!” His eyes widened and he laughed happily but he kept himself in check seeing as they weren’t alone and they were at the King’s palace.

The evening moved along quickly and to my surprise, Killian was named Lieutenant to the King’s fleet. I couldn’t be happier for him. And yet, we hadn’t even shared our first kiss. It was getting really frustrating, especially since we had every reason to celebrate. We did dance quite a bit though after the dinner.
Finally the evening had ended and Killian and his brother shared a carriage with my father and me. Once we got back, Killian accompanied us to the door.
“I will come back in an hour. Wait up for me,” he whispered quietly after my father had gone inside. I tilted my head and nodded.
“I’ll see you soon.”
With that, he kissed my hand again and left.
