Animal Locator, how hard can that be?

The job description was simple. Respond to the calls of loose animals, and try to locate them. If you can't find the animal just tell dispatch the animals were gone on arrival. If you find the animal call the Animal Enforcement Officer so they can pick them up. Usually, it is just dogs and cats. Simple right?

And all you need is a driver's license and a GPS. I have them both.

The training was simple. They told you what to do when you encounter certain types of loose animals. Dogs don't run and pepper spray them. Cats, try to catch them and contain in your car. Deer, unless injured leave them alone. Gators, keep a safe distance and call the gator catcher.

Yeah, gators. It's a Florida thing.

My first mistake was letting my excitement get the best of me. There is a chance I could see a gator I thought.

Well, my first day alone was amazing. Granted all I found were dogs and cats but I still had a blast. It was the second day that made me reevaluate my life.

On my second day, I was doing my patrol, just driving through the neighborhood. I get a call on an unknown street, definitely in an area that I am not used to. As I read the call notes the description of the animal was a bull.

A bull? Maybe a bulldog? People make mistakes.

As I enter the street I come face to face with a brown bull.

Are you kidding me? The bull must have weighed over 1,000 pounds. He had white horns that could impale right through me. I let dispatch know I had the bull. I was terrified, but yet again my excitement got the best of me. My second mistake was getting out of the car.

As I racked my brain trying to figure out what I was told to do when encountering a bull I approached him with caution. I spot an open fence which is obviously how he got out. I try to yell at the bull to get him to go home. Then I noticed my third mistake; my red key chain on my belt.

He must have noticed it because he took his rear right foot and kicked up the dirt behind him. He charged me.

I ran as fast as I could back to my vehicle. I was too afraid to try to unlock the door, so I jumped off the roof of the car. I thought that was it, my life was over.

At that moment the Animal Enforcement Officer comes flying down the street. She uses her vehicle to chase the bull back into the open fence before getting out and closing the fence.

She then turns at me and lets out a light laugh "Good Job Rookie."

Not only was I saved but I realized something in that moment. I want to be an Animal Enforcement Officer.
