A/N This is not the real way Sam and Colby met, but like... its fanfic, so when is it ever the way they really met?

TW: Slurs, Bullying, Violence (kind of), terrible writing. Let me know if I missed any. :)

Colby's POV

It was hot out. About as hot as it had been all summer at band camp. It was never this warm. Our camp senior-counselors were training the junior kids for formation. The medians (that's what we call them at my school) were all on a short water break. I was one of the medians.

I had been learning tuba for a while, since 5th grade. (That probably isn't true.) That made me a freshman-median. There were few other median-freshmen like me. No one usually was that devoted to an instrument in our town. There was one freshman-median that I actually knew of. Sam Golbach.

Sam was a cute boy with golden blonde hair, pale skin that was completely flushed in the sunlight. And these wonderfully beautiful blue ocean eyes. Sam was gorgeous in Colby's mind. If only he could get up the nerve to talk to him.

He was quickly shut down from his thoughts when he heard a shout from one of his fellow medians.

"What the fuck bro! You're kidding right!"

Colby knew that voice anywhere. That was Eugene, the most annoying junior ever. He was usually known for picking on some scrawny senior flutist named Peter.

Curious, he walked over to see what was going on. It seemed that Sam had been the one Eugene was yelling at. Why, well he was there to find out right?

"No, I'm not kidding. Now, just leave me alone." Sam retorted back, brushing his shoulder against Eugene's as he walked away.

"Ew! Don't touch me you freaky suicidal fag!" Eugene screamed.

Oh... that's what it was about. Either it was about Sam being suicidal, or him being gay. Everyone knew that Eugene hated anyone who wasn't 'normal'.

"You probably have a crush on me or something too. Just wanted to hit my shoulder so you could touch me. Right?!"

Colby really wanted to interject at this point. He just couldn't get past the other medians. Suddenly there was an outburst.

"Don't fucking call me a fag you fucking asshole! There is nothing wrong with being gay! And just because I'm into guys doesn't mean I have a crush on the ugliest one I've ever seen! I would never even want to touch you in any other circumstance. And yeah, I'm depressed, and kinda suicidal. No need to point it out you fucking ass! Now would you just shut up and stop talking before you lose your last brain cell and I lose what little patience and sanity I have left?"

With that San stormed off, obviously done with the conversation. But that wasn't the end for Colby. Nor for Eugene.

"Ha! Loser thinks he's so smart, doesn't he. He's probably going to cry in a bathroom and slice his arms open. I mean if it doesn't work the first time try again right? Ha! What a mistake he is! Probably is gonna call his 'daddy' too. Ha! Who am I kidding he probably doesn't have a boyfriend. I mean look at the frea-"

His sentence was cut off when he was met with a swift punch to the side of his jaw. Colby watched almost in slow motion as Eugene fell to the ground holding his jaw where he had gotten decked. There was a red mark blossoming from where his fist had collided.

Eugene had pure fear in his eyes. No one had ever tried to even fight back with him physically. They barely fought back verbally. It was strange for anyone to ever even touch him.

"Never, and I repeat NEVER! Call him anything again. Never even look his way. Actually, you know what?! Never bother anyone ever again! You got it?!" Colby screamed in his face. It felt good to finally stand up to the bully. He needed to be put in his place.

Eugene quickly nodded his head. He scampered up and scurried away from the group that had formed.

Of course none of the councilors had even noticed anything. They never did.

Now came the difficult part for Colby. Finding and possibly comforting Sam.

It didn't take long to find the blonde boy. He was sitting on a curbside where the buses would come pick them up in 3 hours. He stood there for a few minutes before deciding to speak to the boy who was staring at the pavement.

"So... is that pavement interesting, or is it just normal like the rest of the pavement in the world?" Colby joked.

"Nah, the same as all other pavement." Sam replied back in a slightly dejected tone.

"You know what, that pavement is special now. You know why?" Colby asked him.

"Why?" Sam asked, looking at Colby curiously as he sat down.

"It's special cuz' it's the exact pavement that I met a cute blonde boy on. Of course, he didn't think that this pavement was anything special. But, to me it is. I mean, he was kinda sad at that time cuz' some dude had just called him a slur. But either way it's still the spot I finally met him at." Colby smiled at the slightly flustered blonde.

"Wait, you think I'm cute?" Sam surprisingly asked.

"What, you don't think you're cute?" Colby curiously.

"Nah, I'm not. You wanna talk cute. You see that junior-drummer? He's adorable!" Sam said with a slight glint in his eye.

"You mean Harley?" He got a nod from Sam.

"Yeah him! He has like a southern drawl and stuff too. I would so date him!" Sam said with even more if a glint in his eye.

"Aww Sam, I hate break it to you, but he isn't single." Colby told him.

"Wait really?!" Sam asked genuinely surprised.

"Yeah, he's dating that scrawny Peter guy." Colby told him.

"Oh yeah! I completely forgot about that. So, what's your name?"

"I'm Colby, how about you?"

"I'm Sam."

Neither of them really had to ask the other who they were. But it didn't stop the two future best friends from asking.

They continued talking while the faint sounds of a band performance were being performed in the background. They stayed there on the curb side until a bus came to pick everyone up. That talked on the bus too, tuning everyone else out.

They continued to talk after the bus had made all its stops except for the one at Sam and Colby's houses. The two got off, chatting until they reached Sam's house where he said goodbye and went inside.

Colby continued his short walk back home, daydreaming about a blonde boy he had finally talked to on a curbside. He was the happiest he had ever been in a long time.
