“Get out of here!” I heard Eleazar shout. I was pretty sure he was in my house.
Marc ran into my room and shut the door. “Marlene, the undead broke down the front barricade!” There was fear in his eyes. But me, I wasn’t scared at all. “How are you so calm?! Did you not just hear me?! There are three undead in our house!”
“Yes, I heard you,” I answered. “Just leave it to Victor and Eleazar. They’ll take care of it.” I could hear Eleazar and Victor trying to reason with the Flesh Eater.
“Leave it to who?!” Poor Marc looked like he was about to lose his mind! “Of course something like this would happen the one night Dad has to stay at the factory overnight!”
“Stay here,” I told him as I walked over to my door.
“Marlene! What the hell do you think you’re doing?!” Marc tried to grab at me.
“Stay here,” I repeated before leaving my room and closing the door after me. There was an undead in my house, and I had to make sure it wouldn’t stay.
Eleazar spotted me when I appeared at the top of my staircase. “I told you to stay in your room and lock your door!” he shouted at me.
“You know I won’t listen to that!” I shouted back. The Flesh Eater was gone and Victor was standing guard at the door. “Look at my door!” I gestured to the empty hinges on my doorframe, and then to the door lying in the middle of the living room. “What’s going to keep me safe now?!”
“We are,” Victor answered. “Duh.”
Suddenly Marc was behind me, wide-eyed. “Are you…” he stammered. “Are you talking to them?” He looked very pale and I was pretty sure he was about to either throw up or faint, but I couldn’t tell which.
“Yes,” I quietly answered. I gestured to Victor and Eleazar. “They’re my friends.”
“I don’t understand,” Marc said. “They’re going to kill us! How could you be friends with monsters like that?!” He glanced at Victor, who wiggled his fingers in a wave before Eleazar slapped his hand down. “And how can you understand them?!”
I sighed. “I can speak their language.”
“What do you think they’re talking about?” I heard Victor ask Eleazar.
“Like Mom did?” Marc slowly asked. I nodded. “Are you sure they’re not going to hurt us?”
“Watch this,” I said, turning to Victor and Eleazar. “Are you going to hurt us?” I asked them. Victor and Eleazar shook their heads at Marc. “See?” I said, turning back to my brother. “They’re harmless. Here,” I grabbed his hand and led him down the stairs, “I’ll introduce you.”
Marc gulped. “Okay,” he mumbled.
“Victor, Eleazar, I’d like you to meet my brother Marc,” I said, getting their attention. They each stuck their hand out to Marc. “Go on, shake their hands,” I told him. “They’re not gross, trust me. They’re like our hands, only cold.” Marc reluctantly stuck his hand out and shook each of their hands. “And Marc, this is Victor.” I gestured to Victor before gesturing to Eleazar. “This is Eleazar.”
Marc looked over at me. “This is so weird,” he muttered.
“At least they’re friendly,” I scoffed.
“Oh yeah?” Marc demanded. “Then explain the one that broke into our house!”
“There are two different kinds,” I explained with a groan. I went on to explain the Risers and Flesh Eaters the way my mom explained it to me. Marc nodded along as I explained, to show that he understood what I was saying. He may have understood, but I doubt he could really process it. “Do you understand now?”
