Chapter One: Not that bad..

Drops of rain tap slightly at the window giving it a bubbly look. The weather is really cold and I think the bus feels it too. With my forehead pressed to the window of the commercial bus, I stare blankly at the lights on the street, even though I cant see clearly since its dark and the windows are frosty due to the rain. The cold bites at my skin and I relax further into the not too comfortable seat, hugging myself to provide some sort of warmth.

We eventually get off the highway, the bus driver making a sharp turn unto a bumpy road. I chuckle silently at the abusive comments made by other passengers to the driver who ignores, nodding his head rhythmically to the music coming from the radio in the bus while turning the volume up. We finally arrive at the bus terminal, passengers happy that they made it to their destinations safely. I grudgingly get off the bus, picking my luggage from where it was dropped and tagging behind my parents, my siblings wobbling as they walk, sleep still very evident in their eyes. My mum consoles, telling us well soon get to the house where well be staying.

I succumb to the sleep knocking on my eyelids and when I wake up a few minutes later, I see that all our luggage has been neatly arranged in the trunk of a Land Cruiser. A Honda is parked right in front of it and my mum wakes my siblings up, telling us to get into the car. Everyone gets into the car and were off again.

This time the road is bumpy and disturbs my sleep. I cant even count how many times Ive slammed my head on the window or seats. After about twenty minutes of traffic, we make a turn unto a street, everywhere more quiet and eerie looking. We come to a halt in front of a huge black gate and I make out the figure of a woman standing at the door of the gate. With my eyes still heavy, she looks like a ghost.

We all get down from the car and my dads friend, who drove the Honda helped us take our luggage inside the compound, alongside the other man who drove the Land Cruiser. All thats on my mind right now is sleep and Im sure itll be the same for any ten-year old at two A.M. in the morning.

**

I wake up to the sound of someone calling my name and my head starts aching immediately. The last thing I remember is taking off my shoes and climbing a really uncomfortable bed. I force my heavy eyelids open, immediately wishing I didn't. I'm disgusted as to what this bedroom looks like. I get off the bed which smells awful too and look round the room.

The room reeks of damp clothes and old wood. The mattress I slept on is placed carelessly on the cold dirty tiles with no bedspread or covering of any sort, alongside disgusting holes of different sizes in it. An old wardrobe stands at the far end of the room, with worn out clothes and bags piled in it, unorganized. There is a toilet at another corner of the room and I dont even want to know what it looks like.

Everything about this place is just disgusting. I quickly exit the room and make my way to what I assume is the living room. At least thank God it doesn't look as irritating as the bedroom.

The walls are painted in a weird shade of green and a fan hangs limply from the damp looking ceiling. There is a set of faded yellow colored chairs arranged strategically around a brown carpet in the middle of the room. A medium sized television set is hung on the wall, with a television stand right beneath it. At the left corner of the room right after the main entrance door is the dining room. It's furnished with a long polished wooden table and about eight chairs surround it.
