The Depth

It was awfully silent.

The world barely stirred, not a creature dared moved. Had they had the chance, the world would punish them indefinitely.

I found myself here, crouching low within this darkness, reeling in the soft swaying rhythm of the boat I laid within. It was quiet here too, I could barely hear a whisper, let alone a breath stirring amidst my thawing tongue. The stars were all that gave me hope at the moment, the golden glow of their radiating energy spurring life and hope across the misty horizon. Without their glow, I was all but alone.

Of course I couldn't truthfully agree with such a thought.

A soft wave soon splashed upon the side of the boat, wrecking the calming motion with a series of foul ripples. I'd feel such motion with uneasiness, only lifting my head slightly above the edge of the boat to stare outward into the darkness.

Another such wave struck, the boat writhing with discomfort as I lifted up higher, curiosity and fear now the epidemy of my soul.

"Hello?"

I had to be alone. This fear was only imaginary. The ripples themselves were possibly from some lonesome fish looking for its place in the world, or an otter slithering in the dark cold liquid of the lake. But the waves splashed on, disturbing the moment. And I'd come to realize this wasn't natural.

I leaned my head over the edge, lowering one finger down slowly after this brief intermission and swallowed as I gazed upon a strange new reflection.

"Who are you?"

A horrid screech ripped out as the lake opened up beneath me. The sudden cold, dark feeling overcame my senses, coaxing me to sleep, beckoning me to cease motion. I strained to fight back. But I could not breathe.

As for my hopes and dreams, they too submerged with me into the depths of the lake.

And vanished into the mist.

So I found this writing platform called Orton, which has writing games. I had to use the word Ripple and turn it into a short in less than 10 minutes. It was tricky, and pretty hard. But I hope you like!
