2 Years Later
I stood in line at the Carolina Bakery, where the Bakers would be selling their famous fruitcakes. A swarm of reporters had laid out their slew of tents and microphones. I giggled.
The reporters had been sleeping on the front door of our house, but I had always found ways to elude them, by going out the back door.
I finally stopped at the front of the line.
Joseph Baker, the kindest, most sweetest boy ever, secretly had been giving me fruitcakes for free.
"So, Ms. Singer," he continued.
"Hello, Joseph." I greeted him politely.
I reached out for my fruitcake, but he held it up in the air. The customers groaned, having been waiting in line since 10:00 in the morning. I laughed. I passed him money, but he shook his head, and handed me the fruitcake.
He didn't get the chance to say something, so I stopped and looked back, swishing my red hair around, so he could see me better. I gave him a tiny wave, and he tossed me a paper airplane. I bent down and picked it up.
Meet me at Central Park in an hour.
He smiled sheepishly when I looked back, and went back to helping the customer.
1 hour later..
I had refused any part of the food he had offered me, excluding the pastries. He laughed as I inhaled them, and I smiled. Joseph and I had been friends for ages, and he had helped me cope through the Selection drama. I was over Maxon now.
I think.
Every time I saw Maxon on the Report, hugging Kriss and her pregnant stomach, a lump formed in my throat, threatening to swallow me whole. I gulped, momentarily choking. SHe had just given birth to a beautiful baby girl, Angel Schreave.
I sighed. That could have been me.
Joseph's voice seemed far away, but there he was, on his knee. I gasped. A crowd of people had began to swarm all around us.
"America Singer, will you marry me?"
Suddenly, a swarm of feelings that weren't there before engulfed me.
"Yes!" I said. The crowd cheered. He sighed with relief.
But I was more confused than ever.
