Part 1: Liam & Erinne

When Liam came to the door the first time, Erinne had doubts. She hadn't shared a space in four years, and the whole reason she bought the small house was so she didn't have to deal with roommates anymore. But seeing him on the porch, his awkward, lanky frame suspended in crutches with a thankful, regretful smile on his lips, there was something comforting about his presence.

"Thank you so much." He hobbled in, struggling with his bags, until Erinne took two. "For real, I mean it. I would've gone crazy with my mom."

"I know how that goes, believe me. And it works out. I could use a roommate right now," Erinne responded. After she was unceremoniously dismissed from the factory and Liam's previous roommates even-less-ceremoniously kicked him out, they found unlikely solutions in each other. In the middle of a deadly pandemic, that was as good of a bond as any, and better than some.

Erinne opened the door to the back bedroom. It was painfully small, and looked even smaller when Liam hobbled in with his crutches. "I'm sorry it's so small. My office is bigger, but it's upstairs. I figured..."

"No, no, this is great. And thank you, the stairs would be tough." Liam tossed a duffle bag on the bed and started to take off his backpack.

Erinne started to set the two tied-up plastic bags down on the bed. The tied handles of one of the bags pulled loose as she did, dropping its contents over the bed and onto the floor.

"Oh, sorry about..." She trailed off. A collection of colorful silk dresses, lace skirts, and bra and panty sets spilled across the bed.

"Oh, jeez." Liam tried to shuffle the crutches to crouch down and pick up the clothes, but struggled with the cast up to his knee.

"Sorry." Erinne helped him pick up the clothes, avoiding the bra and panties. She glanced at him once, finding his pale face bright pink.

Stuffing the clothes quickly back into the broken bag, Liam gave a choked laugh. "My ex girlfriend's. I don't know why I kept that stuff."

Erinne stole another glance at him, but he didn't meet her eyes. "It's all good." She wasn't sure what else to say, but she hoped he knew what she meant. "I'll let you settle in. If you need anything, let me know."

He flashed a quick, forced smile, still red in the face, and didn't look at her.

Stepping back out of the room and into the living room, Erinne flopped down on the couch where The Great British Baking Show was paused. She pushed play, but wasn't really watching the English contestants making tarts. She didn't know much about Liam. She knew his former roommates, who had married each other and almost immediately gotten pregnant—and subsequently decided they no longer had space for a roommate (or so Erinne was told)—from college, and had only met him three times. He was quiet, not much of a drinker, and did something in programming for work.

Now, Erinne wondered if maybe he was more interesting than she'd first thought.
