I looked at my to-do list on my phone one more time before getting up from the bed. As I got up, I went to my chest of draws which was given to me by my Aunty Melissa, it was painted white and made of wood. It smelt like Pine and Rose. Continuing...
It was still early to go to school as it was only 6:30am. I decided to take my time in the bathroom as I let the hot steamy water flow down my skin. And then I heard a hum, it was like no other. Calm but firm, sweet yet rough. I closed the tap and wore my bathrobe as I looked out of my window to see a guy sitting on the bench near a postbox. Sitting in a hoodie with air pods on. He looked tall, about 6 feet, and had brown hair poking out, I immediately recognised who it was.
I started humming with him, and he suddenly jumped up to see me grinning at him. It was my cousin Spencer, he looked like he just came back from a run. I opened the door of my balcony and he climbed up with his bag through the ladder I kept for me and Melony.
I closed the door as he went and sat at my chair-swing. He looked at me as though telling me to do something. I was puzzled for a second but then I realised I had to go change into clothes instead of staying in my bathrobe.
"Right, I'll be right back." I said as I went back into my closet a bit embarrassed. I changed into a white floral top and a pair of ruffly pants. I climbed out and went and sat next to my cousin.
He looked at me and then started talking "Now before you ask what I was doing there, let me just tell you, it wasn't all my fault." I gave him an uncertain look and then gestured for him to continue, "My mom kicked me out of the house for the night cause I cut curfew and may have egged someone's house, so now I'll have to stay at either you or Jayton'splace until she is not angry."
You guys must be thinking, how does he know Jayton? Well, he is his best friend and even though I hate it, I have to deal with it.
"I'm sure mom and dad will be okay with you living with us for awhile, plus I don't think you'll want to go to JJ after he finds out you came to me first." I started chuckling while cleaning up the bed and making room for us to sit comfortably. Jayton's parents used to call him JJ so now I call him that too. (lol)
He sighs and hugs me as though there was something else on his mind. And I get concerned, he is like a real brother to me, if he is hurt I'll go beat the person to a pulp. "What's wrong?" I ask him, worry surfacing at my throat as my voice quivers.
He looks down as if he had been starved and clears his throat before saying, "Kiara broke up with me" I clapped my hand on my mouth and hugged him tighter, "I'm so so sorry." And then he sobs, he hasn't sobbed in I don't know how long. I look at him for a minute and then say, "We will watch movies all night if we have to, but are you sure you don't want to go to JJ instead?"
"He'll probably do something he regrets, and I don't think I can face him cause he said that he didn't trust her." He looked me in the eye, and I could tell he was being sincere. I quickly hugged him again before going and packing my bag for school. "Spen, how about we go out for ice cream as well after school." (Spen short for Spencer)
He nods and a small smile sits on his face. I smile back and we then go down for breakfast. As we make our way down to the kitchen I hear a plate drop.
I look over to see my mom, who looked quite surprised by the sudden appearance. I go over and pick up the steel plate, which was now dented. And then start explaining everything to her.
She looked at Spen in concern and then back at me. She then told us to sit down and eat before the pancakes go cold and the syrup is covered with ants. I laughed at her serious tone earning a 'behave Katherine ' look from her. I quickly stopped laughing and started stuffing my face with my favourite butterscotch, chocolate pancakes.
As we finished off with the food Spenser excuses himself to go to the bathroom leaving me to help clean up the plates with mom. I start taking the plates one by one and then I hear a *honk*. Mel had come. I smile the biggest smile and take my bag and Spen comes out just in time to run after me as I sprint through the door to get as far away from the dishes as possible.
He catches up with me as he sits in the back seat earning a 'DONT you DARE ruin the car seat' glare from Melony and a *it's okay she's just mad from last time, when you spilled ketchup* look from me.
And the engine suddenly roars alive as Mel pushes the accelerator to move the car in the speed of 80km/h. We yank back in our seat as she drives fast until we are at 100km/h. It quickly drops to 50km/h when we see a cop but the way she moves the car, it feels like we are on a rollercoaster.
"Sooooo, what's up?" Mel sees the look in Spen's face through the rear view mirror while asking. He looks up from his feet to meet her gaze and answers "Heartbreak." She immediately understands and doesn't ask further. But I'm perfectly sure she is smiling on the inside. (Guess! Guess!) I immediately change the topic and start talking about random things.
As we talked and talked we didn't even realise that we already reached school and parked until we saw JJ looking inside our car straight at Spencer. His face was blank, and no emotion could be found. And then our eyes locked, while I glared daggers at him, he was smirking his signature smirk. I sighed and moved my gaze to Spencer.
He bid me a goodbye and went towards JJ. As they were talking I turned to Melony. "He's open" I said while giving her a smug smile. She blocked a bit and then said "If you tease, I'll pull your tongue out." I raised my arms up and down, mocking the 'mercy' look. I got out of the car and strolled towards my new class.
I stopped by my locker to see a note-

I had never had a secret admirer before. Who could it be? And why me? I smiled to myself and pasted the note inside of my notebook with a piece of tape.
I entered the class and sat down on desk far away from the teacher's. It's not like I don't have good grades. It's just that I always get into an argument with JJ because of a question asked in class. Therefore, I decided not to sit anywhere near the front.
I kept my bag down and smiled again, I had smelled the sweet smell of honey and vanilla. Then suddenly the teacher walked in and started talking about the so called 'rules' of the class and how to 'behave'. I mentally rolled my eyes and went back to setting up my new desk. And there it was again the sweet smell of honey and vanilla.
It had been too exhilarating of a start for the day. Something had to go wrong....
