I really tried to fight it. Looking forward to seeing Carter was one of the highlights of my day. After he had carried me to the hospital wing, and dominating boots over heels, I knew we had been through a lot together.

But then America left. And I was there to comfort Maxon. I had to give up Carter. It was my duty to the nation, even after I fell in love with a guard.

Maxon chose me. Now I was the Queen of Illea. My country.

Maxon, my dearest, was busy with work, trying to dissolve the castes. I entered through the princess suite, hugging my husband, before leaving through the armoire. Carter was there, crossing his arms while leaning on the post. I gave him a kiss, before he embraced me. I heard the armoire open. Carter went back to his position near the post, while I scurried outside of the safe room to enter in the Great Room.

I slowly ate breakfast, before starting to think about America.

America. My dearest friend, you had been caned in front of the entire world. She hadn't even begun to tell Maxon about her love.

Now I was Queen. Queen of all of Illea.

Without Carter. I had previously attempted to tell Maxon before our wedding had started, but he was too busy with the wedding preparations.

Now I was here. America was gone. I would never see her again. Her back. Her skilled hands. They would never see the piano or the violins without some serious pain.

Now she and Aspen were Eights. The lowest of the low. A tear ran down my cheek, before I wiped it away with a napkin.

"Dearest!" Maxon rushed into the Great Room, holding a stack of papers. I knew he was pretending. He always was. He had lost that spark in his eye after America was caned. He had also lost his heart. It didn't belong to me. It never would. America was keeping it in her pocket. Like money you would never find until you needed it.

"Hello, my sweet." I blew him a kiss, while proceeding with my quiche. I chewed silently, as the butler appeared with a note on the tray.

For Marlee,

Marlee, its been so long. I'm alone down here, and I miss you so. Sorry if you can't read my writing. It's been difficult without some serious help.

There was a teardrop stain on the folded paper.

I know you and Maxon are probably happy. Carter isn't. He regularly visits down here, so does Maxon.

But you never come, Did Maxon forget to tell you?

Always Yours,

Mer

Mer? I didn't know anyone by that name. I folded the note, before noticing a small piece of tiny writing.

Basement, 2nd door on your left.

I had previously wanted to spend the day with Maxon, so I could finish my duties with him on my side. But I knew that this was more important.

the stairs were long and winding, but I managed to make it down without breaking one of my heels.

Heels.

That was how I met Carter. Carter.

I missed him so. Even now, after the Selection was over, I snuck him kisses, or baskets of food. Casually meeting him in the hall, or giggling,

I sighed. The basement was far from these steps. the second door on the right was blocked off, but I entered it anyway.

What waited in there was definitely a surprise.

I hope you guys like my new story! Marlee and America have switched places, although America and Aspen don't marry. He's still in love with Lucy. he married her a little while ago, and they work in the kitchen. They went under new names:
