A/N I've been getting better at writing consistently (two one shots in a row!) but these have been getting shorter so haha... Anyways, I've been recently obsessed with these YouTubers (started w/ Corpse, then Sykkuno, then Rae, then Mykull, then Lily, then Toast, then Poki, the Scarra... you know how it is. An endless black hole of gamers) and had to write a oneshot. Again, the disclaimer in the description stands no matter what. Have a fun read :)
The bell rings and Corpse wastes no time, running out of school and almost smiling up at the hot, So-Cal summer sun. It's the last day of school and it's been a long one, only the thoughts of summer keeping him going. He's one of the last ones there, Scarra, Lily, Michael and Toast all ended school a week earlier and Poki, Rae and Sykkuno always had shorter school days. Corpse is unsure if these are their real names, but it doesn't really seem to matter. To him, he's more Corpse than he is anything else. He's come close to forgetting his real name during these summers.
He's halfway through stocking the bookshelves with his own share of battered up horror stories when Rae and Scarra come in with two baskets full of snacks they must have gotten from Sykkuno's place, because he's waddling behind them with leftovers from his family's house.
"-and then I said, George, you can't just call me an asshole and then ask for my number! The audacity! So, obviously, I punched him in the face" Rae was babbling on about her classmates, all who seemed just as annoying as Corpse's own, until she spotted Corpse, squealing and dropping her snacks into Scarra's arms, who squawked in protest and nearly fell into Sykkuno. "Corpsieeee, it's been so long!"
Corpse laughed, it had been quite a while. None of them, save for Lily and Michael, went to the same school. They had all met one summer through a mutual friend, Jack, and soon they found out they liked the same video games and all despised school, awaiting summer only to find that it was two months of sitting in the hot summer sun and staying bored. So one day, Michael had dragged them all out into the woods behind Rae's neighborhood (where some distant relative of his owned the property) to record their voices for a Roomba he was making, and the eight of them had discovered a spot in the trees where the sun didn't burn their eyes out and stayed there for the afternoon. And then the next afternoon. And then Corpse had brought a short horror story with him and read it out loud to his friends. And the next day Sykkuno brought his plants to balance them on the branches. And Lily had brought a guitar. And Rae brought a bookshelf to store snacks. And Toast brought his Nintendo. And finally, done with their crap, Michael and Scarra and Poki brought planks of wood and nails and a YouTube tutorial on how to safely make a treehouse. After a summer of broken fingernails, falling out of trees and many scars with a sprinkle of occasional visits to the ER, they had made two tree houses connected by bridge. It was dangerous, and pricey and probably illegal, but it was theirs, and it was home.
Then school started up again, and with busy schedules and moving schools and strict parents, none of them could afford to give up an hour on the train to meet at Rae's. And then, nine months later, summer started up again, and Corpse checked out as many books as he could, bringing his mic and his backpack and making his way to the treehouse.
It had gone on like that for three summers in a row, and Corpse wouldn't trade it for anything. They had raised money through bake sales (in which Corpse refused to participate after the infamous foil incident) that had gotten them a hotspot, a few computers and many other decorative goodies. During the nights in which parents worked overnight or allowed them out, they would sleep in cuddle piles and hammocks and bean bags, setting up a completely safe (thanks to Michael), but probably illegal (thanks to Michael) campfire to sing around and eat smores and scream when Corpse told a particularly scary story.
It only got better and this year it would be perfect.
"Rae, you're choking him" Lily called, climbing into the treehouse with Michael trailing after her, both of them with boxes of scraps for Michael's newest project in their hands. Lily and Michael had been dating forever, and had been friends for even longer, so the two were inseparable.
