Slipping Away

The next morning I rose up around my friends. We all fell asleep on the floor overnight. Today was Saturday, and today something would happen. I stumbled into the kitchen, almost tripping over Henry, and started a pot of coffee. I sat on the couch and silently played with my key chain. By the time 8 am came, only one other person got up and sat next to me. We took turns playing with the chain before 10 am, where everyone was up. I got the coffee ready and handed everyone a cup, including myself.

"This is good." Miranda mumbled.

"It's okay." Jordan retaliated.

I smiled as everyone spoke about my coffee-making expertise. I had no idea I was that good at it. I just watched silently when my mom had made it at home. Now, I tried imitating what she did at home, and it seemed to work. Colin's mom walked into the room all ready like something was up.

"Get ready quickly, you slackers!" She screamed and startled us, "You're leaving for the exam today!" We all jumped up and scurried around, attempting to get ready. Miranda and Jordan borrowed some clothes from Colin's mom and the guys in our group borrowed some of Colin's clothes, which were a little bit tight. We left our backpacks at Colin's house and dashed down the hill to the harbor, which was maybe a mile or two long. We started walking towards the exam booth in front of a large ship, where we got badges with our names on them. Soon, we all boarded the ship, but something struck out of the corner of my eye. My mom glared at me as I took the final step onto the ship..

I waved at her and she had a little smirk, unlike how she acted at home when I brought it up. She cuffed her hands and shouted, "See you soon!" I smiled as the ship bounded for the harbor of Cardinal City. I sat down with my friends and had a long conversation about what we would do after today, what we think the different games/contests will be, or what kind of people we'll encounter.
