CHAPTER 2
I don't think they followed me, which is good. I have to get to Pennsylvania, and fast.
First, I need to eat lunch. My stomach was growling, so I made my way to the grocery store.
****************************************************************************************************************
In the store, I looked for some water, bread, and jelly. I have peanut butter in my suitcase. I also picked up a new brush. My old one broke because I accidentally stepped on it. Anyway, all the stuff came up to about $9.00, so I just the gave her a ten dollar bill.
"Where's your parents?" The lady at the cashier asked. "I'm just running in for a few things . . . . . they're . . . . .um . . . . waiting in the car." I lied. The lady looked suspicious, but she didn't ask anymore questions.
I walked out of the grocery store suitcase/house in my hand. I tried to stay off the road, just in case Chuck and Dave see me, so I toke a short cut through the woods. As I walked, I realized that I shouldn't be alone out here. The problem was I don't have anyone else besides myself.
Suddenly, I heard something behind me. I spun around, but no one was there. "If you're some crazy lunatic, then leave me alone, because I've had enough of it!!" I yelled, but no one answered .
I kept walking. Then, I heard the same noise again. This time, when I turned around, there was a guy my age staring at me.
"Hello." he said softly. I got in a fighting stance. "Who are you? And what do you want? Are you some crazy lunatic that won't leave me alone? Cause if you are, don't step any further. . . . . I'm warning you now!!" I yelled. He was so calm! All he did was chuckle! How rude!
He stepped closer, and I sprang into action. As fast as lightning,I put a bagel in my sling-shot and launched it at his head. "Ow! What the heck was that!" He shouted, rubbing his head.
"A bagel." I answered smiling shyly at him. " Now, what do you want?" I asked getting a rock off the ground, and preparing to attack. " I'm Leo, pleasure to . . . . um. . . . . meet you." He said holding out his hand.
I hesitated for a moment, but finally I shook it. "I'm Jane" I answered. He smiled. I smiled back. He had short brown hair, green eyes, and my skin color. Which is pale, but tan at the same time. "Are you going anywhere special?" Leo asked, not taking his eyes off me.
"Well, Pennsylvania." I answered. "Do you have any transportation?" He asked. How could I tell him I didn't? I didn't want to sound dumb, so . . . . . ."Yes. . . . . " I trailed off.
He knew I was lying. I could see it in his eyes. He waited for a real answer. " I have my feet." I finally answered. He smiled. " You can't walk there all by yourself." He pointed out. Darn, he was right, but I was confident." I can, and I will." I replied stubbornly. We were quiet for a few moments.
" I have a car . . . . , you can use that." He said, breaking the silence. " I don't have a drivers license." I answered, lowering my eyes. " I'll drive you." He suggested. My hopes were lifted, but then I heard a familiar voice, which interrupted our conversation. That voice belonged to Officer Chuck.
" Well well well, Janie's got a friend." Chuck said approaching us. "Hit him with a bagel." Leo whispered in my ear. " I can't assault a police officer!" I whispered back.
" What? No screaming like a baby? Are you going to cry to your mommy to come save you? Oh wait, that's right your mommy's dead!" Chuck taunted. Anger boiled inside me. How dare he talk about my mom that way. If Chuck wasn't a police officer, I'd do way more than sling-shot a bagel at him.
Leo sensed my anger, so he softly rested his hand on my shoulder. It made me feel better, but I was still a volcano about to blow.
"What no comment?" Another voice said, it was Dave's. I've had it. "Oh, I'll give you a comment alright! " I yelled, my fists clenched. I was about to lunge at them, but Leo held me back. Both Chuck and Dave laughed. "Hey, if that's not your boyfriend, I'm free!" Chuck said giving me that same creepy wink as he did in the car earlier today. That made Leo angry.
"Don't you dare talk to Jane that way." Leo said calmly, but there was certainly anger in his voice. "Oh, Help me! A 15 year old boy is going to beat me up!" Chuck yelled sarcastically. "Chuck, shut-up right now." Dave warned. " Your friend is right, don't mess with a . . . . I mean . . . . me." Leo stuttered, but stayed confident.
I didn't want Leo to get hurt. Then I had an idea. I stepped closer to Leo. Leo looked at me. He knew what my idea was.
We stepped forward a little. "Don't take another step . . . . . either of you! " Dave yelled, obviously with fear in his voice. We took another step. Chuck didn't look impressed. "I'm so scared!" Chuck said sarcastically again, between laughs.
"Chuck, SHUT-UP!" Dave yelled. "There just a couple of teenagers, Dave." Chuck pointed out.
Yes, he was right, but he wasn't as strong as use together. Slowly, I got out my sling-shot and loaded a rock, behind my back. "I thought you were going to hit him with a bagel?" Leo whispered., with worry in his voice. "No, a rock will hurt more . . . . . and I want them hurt." I whispered back.
"But that will make him bleed." He whispered, with worry in his voice. Why was he backing out on me?
"So?" I answered, confused. What did he care if they were bleeding. He bit his lower lip as I shouted. "Hey Chuck! Take this!" Then I let go of the rock. It flew in the air. Perfect shot. It hit him right on the head.
Blood dripped as he shouted "AHHHHHH! I'M BLEEDING!" Chuck yelled to Dave. I looked at Leo proudly, but he looked different. He had a crazed look in his eyes.
"Leo, are you---" I started, but he interrupted me. " Jane, leave right now." He told me. " Leo! What's the matter?!" I demanded. " I'll be right back . . . . . just leave Jane . . . . . right now." He said quickly. And with that he disappeared. I did what I was told, and ran.
