"Welcome to Hogwarts," said Professor McGonagall. "The start-of-term banquet will begin shortly, but before you take your seats in the Great Hall, you will be sorted into your houses. The Sorting is a very important ceremony because, while you are here, your house will be something like your family within Hogwarts. You will have classes with the rest of your house, sleep in your house dormitory and spend free time in your house common room."

"But how exactly are we sorted? A first year across from Phoebe said.

But doesnt everyone know that? Phoebe thought, wondering how they didnt know about the wonderful sorting hat. Proffesor McGonagol went on.

"The four houses are called Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw and Slytherin. Each house has its own noble history and each has produced outstanding witches and wizards. While you are at Hogwarts, your triumphs will earn your house points, while any rule-breaking will lose house points. At the end of the year, the house with the most points is awarded the House Cup, a great honour. I hope each of you will be a credit to whichever house becomes yours."

When she had finished speaking chatter broke out in the Hall. Thousands of first years crossed their fingers, hoping to get their desired houses.

"When I call your name, you will put on the hat and sit on the stool to be sorted, Proffesor McGonall said, as the Great Hall quieted once more.

"Abbot, Hannah," she called, as a long blonde haired witch walked up to the front of the room.

"HUFFLEPUFF!" The hat yelled. The Hufflepuff table roared and clapped as they welcomed her to a spot at the table.

Proffesor Mcgonagoll called many other names. When she reached the list of P surnames, Phoebe became particularly interested.

"Potter, Harry," she said. Many students gasped and whispered amongst their friends.

Harry Potter? The Harry Potter? She thought as he walked up to the stool.

The hat thought for a couple of minutes, looking very confused but interested in Potters case. Eventually, it sorted him.

"GRYFFINDOR!" It shouted, making many Gryffindors whoop and holler. Two red-headed 3rd years yelled,

"WE GOT POTTER!" as they welcomed him into Grfyffindor.

A few names later McGonagoll called her name.

"Anne, Phoebe," she said as Phoebe climbed up onto the stool. Proffesor Mcgonagoll placed the sorting hat on her head.

"Hmm...I must say you do have a kind heart...but you act impulsively when someone you love is being picked on. A bit odd. When you want something you try your very hardest to get it. But one factor outs them all...
You are incredibly clever...brilliant even...so I must prounounce you...

"RAVENCLAW!" the sorting hat belted, and Phoebe went to join the Ravenclaws with a bright smile on her face.

She sat down next to a tall wizard with dark brown hair.

"Nice to meet you, I'm Terry Boot," he said. "Glad to see youre in Ravenclaw."

She shook his hand. "Phoebe Anne, she said, getting better at introducing herself.

The feast that followed was amazing. The food was absolutely wonderful, she wished she could give her compliments to the cook. Afterwards, she followed the Ravenclaw Prefects to the common room.
