"It's time..."

Walking down the enormous, torch-light halls with the other first-year Hufflepuffs, following the fifth-year prefect, Nia was deep into her thoughts.

Today had been her first day at Hogwarts, and she was sorted into Hufflepuff. Nia was surprised because she was sure that she would be sorted in Gryffindor like her mother, but the hat clearly had other plans for her. Little did she know, this would create problems in the future.

Nia didn't dwell on that thought as a caring Hufflepuff had cheered her mood up. Instead, she brought her mind to the present and thought of the partner she would get. Though, she didn't want a Slytherin partner. From what she heard, they were mean and only befriended people up to their status — purebloods. Nia was not a pureblood. Nia Perez was a half-blood — her mother was a witch, and her father was a muggle.

She tried to think logically. For the past few years, the Slytherin and Hufflepuff Prefects paired up the first years in their houses with the other to help the first year Slytherins fit in and feel more comfortable because they were the most hated house with the accord of the headmaster. They wouldn't have continued this tradition if something had gone wrong, so maybe it wasn't as bad.

Pushing the doubts at the back of her mind, Nia pasted a soft smile of her lips and admired the architecture of the castle as they made their way to the dungeons. They halted in front of a stoned archway at the end of a cold hall where several students in emerald green robes stood.

The Hufflepuff Prefect joined the Slytherin one at the front and, with a flick of a wand, conjured two scrolls. The Slytherin and Hufflepuff first years gathered around them.

The Slytherins were eyeing the Hufflepuffs down and snickered with each other whilst the Hufflepuffs either stood there innocently, found the floor more interesting, or sent them the same look as the green house students did — Nia being the only one standing innocently, yet when she felt pairs of eyes on her, she would turn around and send them the same look they gave her but with a sweet smile.

The Prefects at the front hushed the first years down and named one by one all the pairs. It was funny to see how the first year Slytherins reacted with the Hufflepuffs. Nia almost burst out laughing when one of the boys sprayed cologne on another, yelling that his partner stunk.

"Malfoy, you're with Perez," shouted the Hufflepuff Prefect after a couple of other students before moving on to the next pair, which bursted her out of her bubble.

"I don't want a partner," scoffed a boy with platinum blond hair.

"Don't worry, I don't want one either. Especially you..." Replied the girl softly as she turned her head around to face the boy, her soft brown eyes locking on his piercing blue eyes, her long wavy hair spilling down her back.

"What do you mean especially not me?" Sneered the blond. "I'm a Malfoy. You should be honoured that you're partnered up with me!"

"Well, who would want to have you as a partner... You look... How do I put this nicely?" Nia hummed. "You look like an arrogant prick. I may be wrong, maybe you aren't, but I'm 99% sure you are because of the vibe you give off."

"I- What-"

"Awn, is, Malfoy, speechless?" Asked the dark brunette with a soft, little smirk.

"My father will hear about this!" Shouted Malfoy with a whiny voice, pointing his finger in her face.

"Well, I can't wait to meet him," said Nia with big smile on her face.

She brought her small, tanned fingers to put Draco's pale finger down, but when her hand touched his hand, she felt an electric shock. Her eyes went round for a split second before she took her finger off his and brushed the folds of her skirt.

She didn't know she associated that electric jolt to a book moment. It probably was just a simple electric and not the type of ones she read in her books where it was the sparks you feel when you meet your true love, so Nia decided to brush it off.

"I— "

Draco was at a loss of words, no snarky comeback. No one ever spoke back to him before and especially not this nicely.

"Alright, you lot!" Shouted the Slytherin prefect. "Now that you all have partners, you guys can go back to your dormitories!"

"Bye, Malfoy," said Nia with too much of a sweet smile for Malfoy.

The next gesture she did made his eyes widen — she brought her fingers to her lips, blowing the Slytherin a kiss, as she walked away with her Prefect and housemates.

She's got a snarky spark, yet is still nice... I like that.

Draco pushed his gel hair back and headed to his dorm. The arrogant Slytherin and the sweet Hufflepuff hadn't known then, but that day a new, strong friendship had blossomed.
