My mom use to tell me when I was younger that swimming is like life. The lane and laps are the tiring journey. The lane lines are your paths. The time is life's clocks and your team is what helps you through the tuff parts and are there to cheer you on.
Now though I know that there is so much more to it. Like in life you have more troubles, you have more stuff to go through and even longer or darker paths to take. When in swimming you have so many laps too go through before you can stop, and even when your race is over you can rest. You can't do that in life really. But there is one thing you can't and most definitely should not do and that is too quit.
It took me awhile to figure that out. Because I did at one point want to quit. Quit with everything, quit trying, quit feeling like a failure, but than I found out that with everything that goes on there is always one little silver lining. You just have to look for it, but that's hard when you move away from everything that you know.
My family moved to South Carolina for my brother. He had started training with the US Olympic Swim Team, I'm very proud of him don't get me wrong, but I just wish that we could have just stayed in Mississippi. I don't want to meet new people and be the new kid at school again. It gets annoying when you move a dozen times in just seventeen years. When you have to go to yet another school and swim on yet another new team. I want to stay put for more than two years or less.
My mind gets pulled from its thoughts as Josh enters the room. He came home for the weekend like he always does.
"Hey lil sis." He says as he sits next to me on the couch, "How is it going? Nervous for school on Monday?"
I just smile at him and laugh, "I shouldn't be because I am a pro. But I still kinda am."
'That's expected."
Josh and I aren't the tippical brother and sister. Yes we fight but over little things. My mom says that because we were raised to respect each other and if we do something to each other, we would be punished for it. I couldn't agree with her more.
Just then my dad comes home from his first practice.
"Hey what are you two up to?" He asks as he walks over and sits in the chair next to me.
"Nothing much. How was your fist day?" I ask
He let's out I little laugh before answering."It was long. Those kids have lots to learn.'
Josh starts laughing, "Well dad that's what you get for teaching young ones."
I wack at Josh's arm which only makes him laugh harder.
"I think that it's great with what you are doing." I say which gets me rewarded with a look from Josh.
My family's life style is surrounded by team suits and caps. When my parents found out that we were moving. They immediately started looking for coaching jobs. I started too look for a competitive team to swim on and Josh...well he trained harder.
Dad leaned back in the chair and turned enough so he was still looking at us.
"So Kelsey are you nervous for your first day of practice?" Dad asks.
"Na I will be fine." I say with a smile
"Sure you will. You are Kelsey Miller and you can do anything." He says with a weak smile. The smile that I know so well and smile that let's me know what he's thinking.
"So um," Josh says while clearing his throat to release the silence, "I will be leaving tomorrow to go back to training."
Dad raises his eyebrows at this "Oh well then we will have to go out. Your mother should be home soon. So I'm going to shower." Then he stands and leaves.
------------------
"What can I get you ladies and gentlemen tonight?" The waiter says after he brings us are drinks.
Dad ordered a pasta dish as did mom. Josh and I ordered a hamburger and fries. Mom was talking about her first day which was interesting. She says that most of the kids act up and are so out of control that its not even funny. Then there are a few who do exactly what they are suppose to do.
"So Josh how has training been?" Mom asks
"Well it's definitely difficult but it's also a blast." He says then takes a sip of his coke.
"Well that is great! Oh how is Ryan doing?"
"He's doing fine. Arm is still a little sore but doing better."
Ever sense Josh got to hang with Ryan Lochte they have been best buds. Which is pretty cool. Because Ryan is like my idol. I wish that my times were half of his.
I have met the whole team which was fun. I got too practice with them to and it was so much fun.
"What about you Kelsey. You excited to start again?" Mom asks.
"I am. I have missed it so much." I say with the biggest smile.
I take a drink of my Dr, Pepper and shudder because it's cold. Josh seeing this started to laugh and then we all were laughing so hard.
