"You can't be serious? I thought I was saved from your motherly ways." She puts a hand on her head and pretends to faint on the bed.

I laugh, tilting my head back slightly. "It's nice to see you too... after three years. Thanks for asking about that fyi." I smile and plonk on the bed next to her, my sour mood from earlier gone, and the shield that I had formed over the years disappeared when I saw her.

She immediately sits up and envelopes me in a hug.

"My god, I've missed you heaps." She mumbles into my neck.

I put an arm around her and pull away slightly to look at her, a grin on my face.

"So how'd my little girl fare without me?" I tease, pinching her cheek lightly.

She shoots me a joking glare and huffs like a three year-old, crossing her arms over chest.

"I'm not little." She sticks her nose up in the air like the arrogant little child she is. "I'm thirteen."

I laugh and she shoots me a withering looking so I try to smother it but it doesn't work.

I pat her head and pull her in for another hug, her blonde hair bouncing. "Welcome to the teenager years my friend. Enjoy the beginning because you're never going to be the same again."

"Oh ew. Just because my parents aren't around to give me 'the talk', doesn't mean the obligation lands in your hands." She scrunched up her nose a bit at the thought.

"It's not an obligation Noah." I ruffle her hair. "It's just something I have to do, cause that's what older sisters do." I nudge her with my elbow.

"When did you transfer to sister? I thought you were my mother." She puts her head in her hands and let's out an exaggerated sigh.

When Noah arrived here when she was six, I made it my unnecessary mission to make sure she had a friend to get through this.

She had been through three foster parents before she came here, and none of them could handle the big bundle of energy, and none of them were particularly kind to her either. So, I tried to make sure her life at the foster centre wasn't as rough as I had it in my first year.

I promised that once she had made a few friends that I would close myself off again, but Noah somehow lodged her way into my life permanently. I've kind of turned into an overprotective mother around her.

"So what happened in those three horrific years that I wasn't here to see you turn into a teenager?"

She rolls her eyes and sighs.

"Seventeen boys and fourteen girls were fostered, and sadly one of this wasn't me." She sighs. "Not that I'm counting or anything." She adds quickly. "Oh, but that boy you had a major crush on went into the army or something cool."

I laugh, grabbing a pillow and chucking it her head. "Too bad I can't remember what he looks like can I?"

"You seriously can't have no memory of this guy!" She exclaims, waving her hands about. "I mean you kissed the poor guy, how can you not remember?"

"You know why, Noah." I stand up abruptly, my voice cold and hard.

She frowns and something flashes in her emerald green eyes, but it disappears too fast for me to recognise.

"Right. Yeah. I forgot." She mumbles, looking down and fiddles with her fingers.
I suddenly feel a pang of sympathy towards the small girl, so I walk over and ruffle her hair.

"You didn't do anything." I smile and wrap my arm around her shoulders.

"Why are you back here anyway?" I can hear the confusing colouring her voice. "I thought you went off to Australia, with all the 'g'day mate' and the kangaroos everywhere and stuff."

I sigh and hold her closer to me. "Yeah, let's just say I didn't like Australia very much. And for the record, there are no kangaroos in the city except for the zoo."

She giggle and shoves my arm playfully. "Yeah I know, just teasing you." She pokes her tongue out at me. "What was wrong with Australia?"

"Let's not talk about that." I pat her shoulder once before standing up.

"Where are you going?" She sits up a little straighter as she watches me stand up.

"Just have to go check on someone. Be back in a few." I give her a wink before quickly exiting the room.

She gives me a quick goodbye and pulls out a book as I close the door behind me. The door creaks loudly and I wince. I forgot how loud this place was.

As I descend the stairs, heading to the office, a loud ruckus comes from behind one of the closed doors.

I frown. It was one of the older kids bedroom.

I press my ear to the door, trying to listen to what's happening. The voices are muffled but I do mange to make our my name a few times and hear a loud grunt, like someone getting punched in the stomach.

I shove open the door, going to stop whatever was happening in there.

"What is God's name-." I pause, and blink a few times making sure I'm seeing things right.

"F-Finn?" I stutter, surprised at the position they're in.

Finn has the other boy's shirt curled up in his fist and his other arm looks like it's ready to beat the life out of the boy.

The boy looks up at me confused. "Wait, you know this guy Tally?"

I can see the muscles in Finn's arm tense when he mentions my name.

"Yeah I do, Blake. How do you two know each other?" I cross my arms over my chest, not impressed with the situation I just walked into.

Blake eyes me for a second before looking at Finn, a silent communication happening between the two.

I tap my foot, waiting for an answer. "Well? I'm waiting." I raise an eyebrow at them, leaning against the doorframe.

Finn shoots a warning look to Blake who shrugs and snatches his shirt from Finn. "Nothing. Nothing... at all." Blake mutters, pushing Finn out of the way roughly and exiting the room. I frown and look back to Finn who is staring at me like he's lost the most precious thing in the world.
